Designing your home is a piece that many people overlook when trying to plan. If you skip this step, your house will never easy to maintain. I know that sounds weird, but it’s true. Once you’ve nailed this thing, your house organizes itself.
So grab a ticket for the proverbial tour bus because I’ll be your guide as we explore the “landscape.” 🚍✨
What Is Design (and Why Is It Important)?
Designing means giving all categories of things in your house a specific living space – not just in a random closet, but in a logical, functional “place”.
Think of it like this:
If everything has a clear “address”, it’s easy for anyone in your family to find it again return it. That’s how you stop the endless cycle of collecting and rearranging.
STEP 1: Map Your Home
Before buying bins or baskets, draw your house. Each one room district.
Then inside each room, divide it into cities. For example, in the kitchen you may have:
-
Hot Beverage City: coffee maker, cups, tea, sugar
-
Cooking City: pots, pans, dishes
-
Snack City: chips, granola bars, snacks
Within each city there is neighbors. For example, in Hot Drink City, you might have a “Coffee Area” (all your coffee items together) and a “Tea Area” (all your tea items together).
STEP 2: Tour Your Home with Locations
Let’s visit some common places to see how this works:
The entry point
This is yours a place to live – coats, shoes, bags, and keys. Break it down and into:
-
Mudroom City: shoes, boots, coats
-
Utility City: batteries, manual, flashlights
The Craft Zone
If you are an artist, you need a devotee Craft City (whether it’s an entire room, a corner, or just one shelf). Inside:
-
City of Tools: scissors, glue, tape
-
Children’s Hands Neighborhood: crayons, markers, paper
-
Your Recreation Area: yarn, paints, and whatever you like
Gym
Even if you’re not very active (like 🙋♀️), keeping your gear together is key. Dumbbells, yoga mats, and resistance bands are all included Amandla City – near where you use them.
Tourist Area
Think like a host: guests should easily find everything they need.
-
Snack Neighborhood: granola bars, drinks
-
Neighbor’s Wash: toothbrush, soap, lotion
-
Comfort Neighbors: blankets, towels, pillows
The Pet Zone
Pets need their own city too! Put bowls, treats, leashes, and medications all together Pet City so nothing is lost (and your family knows where to look).
STEP 3: Lazy zone
Design isn’t about perfection — it’s about making life easier. Put things away when you use them.
-
Dishes should sit next to the dishwasher.
-
Dog food should be stored where you feed your dog.
-
First aid and medicine should be neighbors in the bathroom so you can grab a bandage and an Advil in one trip.
When you’re feeling lazy, you save time and energy — and your home naturally stays tidy.
STEP 4: Declutter + Zone = Magic
Here’s a hard truth: you can’t sort out clutter. If you have duplicates, random piles, or things spread across multiple rooms, you’ll never feel overwhelmed.
Declutter first. Then put the rest.
👉 This way, when you take something, you will know immediately where it belongs. And if it has no place? That’s your clue that it’s probably not homemade.
Real-Life Example: Going from Doom Room to Action
I just worked with Jessica McCabe from How to diagnose ADHD and his partner, Raph, in their “chamber of destruction.” At first you couldn’t even see the ground. But when we were scattered and designing their house, everything clicked.
Now when they pick something up, they know indeed where it is going. And if it has no place? It doesn’t last.
Their entire house has been tidy ever since, because landscaping takes the guesswork out of it.

Your Homework: Make Your Map 🗺️
Take the book and walk around your house as if you were a stranger who just walked in.
-
Draw each one room (district).
-
Break it down cities based on activities.
-
Create neighbors in small sections.
It may mean shaking things up at first, but if every “neighbor” stays close to their reasonable friends, your house will take care of itself.
