How PetPace Can Help You Spot Your Dog’s Pain Before It Becomes Obvious

PetPace Smart Collar Review Dog Heart Rate vs. Heart Rate Variability: Why HRV Can Tell You So Much More

One of the hardest parts of loving a dog is knowing that they can’t just tell us when something hurts. If it was as simple as, “Hey, my hips are bothering me today.” Instead, dogs do what dogs always do, adapt, compensate, and carry on like furry little pets.

That’s pretty good for survival. Not so good for pet parents.

Pain, especially chronic pain, often creeps in silently. For Freya, the subtle symptoms included a lack of motivation to walk, pausing and kind of doing a little dance before jumping on the couch and falling asleep. It is easy to remove these things like aging, mood, or heat. Sometimes they are. Sometimes they are not. This is where the PetPace Smart Collar can really help.

What is PetPace?

Before we get into how PetPace helps with pain detection, let’s go over the collar itself. I highly recommend reading my PetPace review. I skipped a bit because I really like this collar, but it’s still a good read (Yes, I wrote it, so I’m biased).

At first glance, the PetPace looks like just another smart collar. And sure enough, we’ve seen a lot of that. GPS trackers, activity monitors, collars that wash your clothes… ok, maybe not the last one but hey, wouldn’t that be cool?

PetPace does a few of those things (not laundry though). It it can be use GPS to track your dog. It it does monitor your dog’s activity. But it goes beyond the basics, especially when it comes to real-life tracking.

Instead of focusing more on location or exercise, it continuously tracks your dog’s fitness data, including:

  • heart rate variability (HRV)
  • Breathing rate
  • Body temperature
  • Activity levels
  • The situation is changing
  • Quality of sleep
  • Movement patterns

That data is fed into a powerful AI system that creates what PetPace calls a Pain Indicator Score.

In fact, that’s the part you should pay attention to. While “Freya’s dog walked 10,000 steps today” is interesting, knowing that your dog may be injured before it goes limp is a whole different ball game.

Why Dogs Are So Good at Hiding Pain

Dogs are masters of hiding when it comes to discomfort. It is an instinct. In the wild, showing weakness makes you vulnerable. Those threads don’t just disappear because they are sleeping on bone beds and living a pampered life.

This is especially true in conditions such as osteoarthritis. Arthritis rarely appears at night. Changes are slowly piling up.

Maybe your dog hesitates on the stairs. Maybe stretch for a while before stopping. Maybe they don’t want to chase the ball too much.

Or maybe they’re like Freya. Freya’s arthritis didn’t seem like a dramatic limp at first. It was more subtle than that. He gets stiff after a long walk, likes one leg after a rest, and sometimes seems a little “nervous”. Nothing major. In fact, I thought it was just a sprained ankle. In my defense, it has been thrown around for a while and it works from time to time.

That’s what worries about pain, though. When it’s obvious, it tends to be there for a long time.

How PetPace’s Pain Indicator Score works

PetPace’s Pain Indicator Score is designed to catch those subtle shifts. It looks for trends in biometric data, not just isolated moments. That is very important.

For example, if your dog’s heart rate fluctuations change, his sleep is disrupted, his breathing slows down, and his posture changes over time, those small pieces can add up to a bigger picture.

Individually, you never know. Together, they can point to discomfort. Think of it as your dog dropping cues instead of making announcements. PetPace just happens to be pretty good at collecting leads.

The Science Behind It

PetPace has a boatload of clinical research behind it. I’m not exaggerating there; it would actually fill a boat if you printed it all out. When I first tried the collar, they sent me to about a dozen scholarly research papers, information on the science behind the collar, how PetPace is used by real vets around the world, and much more.

Long story short, peer-reviewed studies have shown the platform can reliably track activity and differentiate between healthy dogs and dogs with osteoarthritis. That’s important because it shows measurable differences in life exist, and can be tracked.

That gives real support to the idea that biometric monitoring can detect changes related to pain before observation alone.

That said, it’s important to keep expectations realistic.

PetPace not diagnostic tool. It won’t tell you, “Your dog has arthritis.” It will not replace your veterinarian.

And it won’t magically explain every weird thing your dog does (some of it is just weird, and no algorithm can explain that).

What it can be making marking changes early enough that you can start asking better questions.

Why Early Detection Is So Important

This is probably the biggest decision of all. A dog does not have to be seen limping or crying to be uncomfortable.

By the time most owners experience chronic pain, their dog may have been dealing with it for months. That delay is important.

Early intervention can:

  • It slows down the progression of joint damage
  • Improve everyday comfort
  • Help maintain muscle strength
  • Save for long walks
  • Improve sleep quality
  • Support better weight management

With arthritis in particular, catching it early can make a big difference.

Pain management works best before the body begins to compensate in ways that cause more problems. When dogs take weight off painful joints, they can put pressure on other muscles and ligaments. Then you no longer face one problem; you are experiencing a domino effect.

A tool like PetPace can give you a start.

Is PetPace Suitable for Dogs With Arthritis?

If you have a large dog, a breed prone to joint problems, or a dog with a history of bone problems, it makes more sense.

For dogs like Freya, where bad days can be subtle and inconsistent, having objective data can be incredibly helpful. Here’s the thing: memory is unreliable.

You think, Was he a late riser this week? Or was it last week? PetPace gives you something concrete to look at. Patterns, trends, change over time.

That’s helpful whether you have arthritis, are recovering from an injury, or are just looking after an elderly dog.

Even if you have a small dog with high energy, it is worth it. When Freya was young, she was prone to minor soft tissue injuries (like her sprained ankle) because she ran around the stony, uneven yard without watching her step.

Final thoughts

PetPace is not a crystal ball, nor is it a substitute for good old-fashioned observation or veterinary care. But it fills a gap that many pet parents know well, the space between “something unheard of” and “now it’s obvious.”

That space can be long. Sometimes it’s too long. For dogs who are experts at pretending everything is fine (which most of them are), having a tool that can catch pain before it becomes a serious problem really helps.
