About Knowing the Best Cat Food
Founded in 2002, Know Better is a pet supplement company that offers a limited selection of homemade food mixes for cats and dogs. The company was founded by Dana Harris and remains a family-run business based in British Columbia, Canada today.
Like many pet food companies, Know Better was born out of the founder’s desire to improve the lives of pets including his own. Instead of focusing on standard pet foods like kibble and dry food, however, the brand wants to empower pet parents to make their own homemade food from scratch.
To make your own homemade cat food, all you need is to provide fresh meat. Knowing Better for Cats takes the guesswork out of the easy-to-use mixers that you can incorporate into your cat’s favorite protein, and the formula can be used with raw or cooked meat. All that is left is to divide the food and put it in the refrigerator or freezer.
Acquisition and Production
In Canada, Know Better Pet Food products are manufactured at company-owned facilities on Salt Spring Island in British Columbia. Any products sold in the USA are manufactured in USDA inspected facilities by a licensed partner for domestic distribution.
Know Better says all its ingredients are human-grade except for chicken liver. The company does not provide specific information about the availability of ingredients, nor does it specify exactly how the premixes are made.
It is important to note that Know Better does not make any claims that its premix formulas comply with AAFCO guidelines, and the product does not use terms such as “nutritionally adequate” or “complete and balanced” that often appear on commercial pet food labels. The brand suggests rotating different proteins to help balance your pet’s diet.
Has Knowing The Best Cat Food Been Forgotten?
No, Know Better does not appear to have any product recalls in its history. We were unable to find any information about the company’s licensing partners in the United States or their recall history.
What Kinds of Cat Food Do You Know Best to Offer?
Knowing Better doesn’t technically provide you with cat food. Instead, the company sells a limited selection of powdered mixes that pet parents can use to improve the nutritional balance of pet food. You simply mix the powder with water and fresh meat (raw or cooked).
At the time of this review, Know Better had two recipes available for cats. Get to Know Cats Chicken Recipe includes chicken liver and Get to Know Cats Beef Recipe includes beef liver. Otherwise, the recipes seem to have the same mix of protein, fat, fiber, vitamins, and mineral sources.
Besides chicken liver or beef liver, both recipes contain the following ingredients:
- Egg yolk
- Calcium lactate
- Gelatin
- Whey protein separates
- Psyllium leaves
- EFA in fish oil
- Taurine
- Kelp
- Vitamin B complex
Know Better for Cats premixes do not contain any preservatives, artificial flavors, or added color. This product provides nutrition facts on the website based on a 120g serving size, including lean meat (defined as chicken). The nutritional composition of chicken and beef is exactly the same, and the product does not provide sample analysis using other types of meat.
Although premixes such as these are often designed to improve the nutritional balance of homemade foods, Know Better does not guarantee that the resulting product will end up being more nutritious. And the formula doesn’t seem to follow AAFCO guidelines, which should be considered if you’re considering using this product as the basis of your cat’s daily diet.
What Do Our Test Cats Think?
To test Know Better for Cats, I ordered a trial size package of both the chicken and beef recipe mixes. I don’t feel comfortable feeding my cats raw food, so I adapted both recipes using cooked meat. For the beef recipe, I used boneless pork and, for the chicken recipe, I used boneless, skinless chicken breast.
Preparing homemade meals with Know Better premixes was quick and easy. It only took a few minutes to cook and cool the meat, then I just stirred in the recommended amount of water and premix powder.
My two cats, Munchkin and Biscuit, seem to enjoy food prepared using Know Better premixes. They liked the food best when it was freshly made and still warm, but they seemed to like it when I heated it gently in the microwave. It was not very attractive to them.

Good Review
What customers seem to like most about Know Better premixes is how easy they are to use. Some satisfied customers consider homemade food to be healthier than commercial options, and many of those find Know Better to be a more cost-effective option.
“My cat was always shedding and had lots of hairballs and didn’t look good… Within a week of starting this on her cat litter, I saw immediate improvement! It’s been a month and she hasn’t had any breakouts or hairballs since. She has better energy and looks better overall. And an added bonus is that her little box doesn’t smell anymore.” – Ryan reviews Know Better for Cats Chicken Recipe on Amazon.com, April 6, 2026
“My best friend makes cat food for cats and she goes out to buy all the things separately. I showed her this and she was surprised that it had everything she needed for each one.
My cats love this and I feel much better about the food they need to stay healthy. Canned food I feel is questionable.” – DCFrench reviews Know Better for Cats Chicken Recipe on Amazon.com, December 9, 2025
Negative Reviews
Customers who write negative reviews of Know Better premixes often do so because their cat just didn’t like the food. Some dissatisfied customers find the smell of the product unattractive, either sour or fishy. Opinions are mixed on whether the product offers good value.
“All in all this was a complete mess in our house, and we have 8 cats, all of whom didn’t touch it after that first taste.” A lot of money was spent on meat and ingredients so that the animals of the forest could eat it, since no one else would eat it. – janejuliet reviews Know Better for Cats Chicken Recipe on Amazon.com, May 14, 2026
“The flavored beef smelled like an old fish tank that had been mixed and destroyed all the meat. My cats not only ate it, they recoiled from it. It’s not a good product.” – Rose S. reviews Know Better for Cats Beef Recipe on Amazon.com, February 23, 2026
How Much Does the Best Cat Food Cost?
Know Better for Cats is a nutritional supplement designed to be combined with fresh meat. The premix powder itself ranges from about $2.12 to $4.50 per ounce, depending on the volume you buy. You can start with a 4.8 ounce trial size for about $22 or buy in bulk in a 5 pound size for $169.95.
If you’re hoping to save money on homemade cat food, your costs will vary depending on the type of meat you choose. Know Better can be used with any lean meat, but it’s important to vary the types to keep your cat’s diet balanced.
Where is the Best Cat Food for Sale?
The two best places to buy Know Better premixes are from the company directly or on Amazon.com. Both sites offer the product in all three sizes (4.8 ounces, 24 ounces, or 5 pounds). If you buy directly from Know Better, you will receive free shipping to the USA and Canada but no subscription offers are available.
Know Better is also available commercially, so it may be available in stores in other locations. There is no store location available on the brand’s website, unfortunately.
Overall, Is Knowing The Best Cat Food A Good Choice?
Homemade food is not the right choice for every cat, and is best done with the help of a board of veterinary nutritionists. Nutritional imbalances are common with artificial diets, and even small mistakes can have serious consequences for your cat’s health in the long run.
Premix supplements such as Know Better make the process of making homemade cat food easier, but they may not guarantee proper nutrition. Know Better, in particular, does not claim that its products are nutritionally complete or formulated in accordance with AAFCO guidelines. The nutritional analysis on the product’s website only applies to cat food prepared with chicken meat, but the product’s packaging itself shows a verified analysis of the premix only.
If you simply want to find out if your cat will be interested in homemade food before you completely prepare its food, Know Better premix offers an easy, inexpensive way to do it. We recommend working closely with your veterinarian if you want to provide home-made food for a long time. You may also want to look at other premix brands that offer a higher level of transparency about the composition and nutritional value of the products.
