Turns out, people with insanely clean homes aren’t scrubbing all day — they’ve just discovered cleaning habits that are less tiring (but weirdly effective). And once you see these, you won’t know you don’t see see.
Let’s dive into 10 weird but very smart cleaning habits that can improve the quality of your home — even if you’re not naturally organized.
1. A New Vision
Seriously – come down. Like, to crawl on the ground down. Dirt, hair, and dirt sitting around the kickplate in your kitchen or the base of the furniture legs? It’s bad. And you’ll never see it unless you get down to your dog’s view.
The same goes for high places like the top of your refrigerator or bookshelves. Dust collects there and blows away. Try a new angle, and you’ll be shocked — but also inspired to clean up.
2. Play “Get Fingerprints”
Grab a bowl of soapy water and a sponge, and make a game: walk around your house and look for bad fingerprints in all the usual (and unusual) places – doorknobs, light switches, walls near the stairs, fridge handles, microwave buttons, remote controls, laptops, even the little twisted blind handles.
Just wipe those away, and boom – your whole house feels cleaner outside deep clean all.
3. “Touch Up Tango”
This sounds a little over the top, but hear me out: once a month, grab a can of trim or door paint and go touch up dings and scuffs. Doors, boards, trim – anything that needs a little love.
It takes about 10 minutes, but it quickly refreshes your area and makes it feel clean. Just be sure to let your family know “Don’t touch anything white” so they know not to come in or touch wet paint. 😆
4. The 15-Minute Declutter Habit
Pick one random drawer or cabinet once a week and organize it for 15 minutes. Cross out what you don’t use, organize the rest, and put things where they really belong.
This quick cleanup keeps clutter out of control and makes everyday spaces (like your kitchen junk drawer) feel. by magic under control.
5. Clear All Doors
This is a practice that is taken for granted. Once a month, grab some detergent and wipe down all of your doors – especially your closet doors, refrigerator doors, your dishwasher, and exterior entry doors.
You’d be surprised how much gunk builds up on them. Shiny fridge doors = shiny looking kitchen.
6. Turn On The Funk
Whether it’s cold outside or hot enough to fry an egg, once a month I open all the windows in the house for 10 minutes.
That fresh air washes out cooking smells, dog smells, and whatever mysterious funk has been building up. It’s like a reset button for your whole home.
7. Febreze All Soft Items
Your couch, curtains, throw pillows — they’re all odor sponges. If you don’t wash them often (and who does?), then hit them with unscented Febreze (no this is not a sponsored post – I really like the stuff).
It doesn’t just block odors – it deodorizes them. Your house will smell clean again feel clean again. Trust me on this.
8. Clean Your Cleaners
If your vacuum has zero, it’s probably not broken – it’s just bad. Clean the filter, wipe it, and don’t forget to wash your mop.
Also: clean your dishwasher, your washing machine, and your sponges. This sounds weird, but it makes your actual cleaning more effective. Dirty cleaners = dirty results.
9. Reset the house
Once a month, I pretend my house is an Airbnb and a guest is about to arrive. I walk around with a lot wise eyes, they see the clutter and the bad that I tend to overlook.
I’m not trying to make the magazine perfect – clean, clear, and cozy like a really good rental. It is a mental trick that does a big the difference.
10. Embrace the Splash Zone (Yes, We’re Talking Pee)
Okay, this one is a little powerful – but it’s a game changer. After finding out (by blacklight!) how far the pee goes in the toilet, I now clean it complete “splash area” in the bathroom.
That means the sides, the back wall, the floor, and even the pipes. Especially if you live with boys (or husbands who intend to be toddlers), this is a non-negotiable. Your bathroom will smell clean instead of faint… suspicious.
You don’t have to do all 10. Start with one or two that feel possible, and build from there. These weird cleaning habits only take a few minutes, but they’re what separates “looking clean” from “feeling clean.”
