I just finished a huge, emotional, impactful home renovation—and I’m still talking about it. It wasn’t just a change of space; it was a change in the way the family lives and feels in their home. And the best part? It was thanks to the wonderful Jessica McCabe from How to ADHD.
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by your home, especially with ADHD in the mix, all of these home improvements will leave you inspired, hopeful, and ready to tackle your clutter.
Meeting Jessica: YouTube Star and New Mom
When I first met Jessica at an ADHD conference, I was in awe. I’ve been watching his channel (The ADHD Method) for years—his “Hello Brains”! it always makes me smile. But when he got help and sent me a video of his home, my heart broke a little. Everywhere, every room was full of clutter. I knew that feeling—when your house gets too strong, you don’t see it anymore. You just… survive it.
Jessica and her partner Raphael were immersed in things and chaos. Between writing a New York Times bestseller and having a baby, their house had become a place to live, not a home. They had not taken off, invested, or planned. And now? They needed to prosper.
Visual Organizers and Clutter Personality: Butterfly Alert!
Jessica’s editing style was immediately apparent—she’s classic Butterfly 🦋. That means he’s a visual organizer who needs to see his stuff to remember it’s there. But when everything out, it becomes a visible mess again nothing it is actually outstanding. Couple that with a coat closet turned “closet of doom,” overflowing counters, and zero choice spots… it was clear that this house needed an ADHD-friendly system overhaul.
Starting to Declutter: Go Guilt-Free, Rules Hello (Kinda)
Getting rid of waste has never been just about stuff. It’s about emotions, history, and how your brain works. So I gave Jessica and Raphael some gentle “soft rules” to follow:
-
If you haven’t used it in a year…
-
If you wouldn’t buy it again…
-
If it doesn’t make you happy or doesn’t serve a purpose…
Let it go.
We laughed, we cried, we said goodbye to random things saved because another day we may need them. No regrets!
The Messy Middle
At the center of any overall home declutter even worse. You question your life choices, your sanity, and whether you’ve made a big mistake. By noon on Day 1, we had completed only two wardrobes. I was panicking. But that middle ground is where the magic happens—it’s war before peace.
We thrive on it by remembering: decluttering isn’t about perfection, it’s about creativity to flow. And the ADHD brain needs visual cues, not hidden bins of chaos.
Landscaping
The key to this whole home improvement was place! We’ve created functional environments that make sense of how Jess and Raphael really live:
-
Entryway Launchpads for all family members (yes, even the dog!)
-
The Real Coffee Station so that the kitchen counters could breathe and Raphael had a place of this special interest.
-
Cabinets of Doom became Orderly Cabinets using small IKEA storage
-
Great Playroom for Adults that honors Jessica’s love of music and reading
Every inch of their house now has a purpose—and more importantly, a system that makes it work (and will continue to work long after you leave).
The Power of Letting Go
One of the best moments? When Raphael shared that in a previous relationship, he was afraid to give things up because he was afraid of losing everything and having to start over and buy his things again. But this time, he felt safe. That trust between them—the ability to say, “We’re safe together.
It also proves that eliminating waste is not just physical. It is emotional and can heal.
The Big Reveal
We opened up the last space to Jessica and Raphael—and I’ll be honest, the tears came. Finally they see their home not as a dungeon, but as real home. Their daughter now has a magical playground. Their kitchen is practical and quiet. Their living room reflects their personality and passions. All designed with an ADHD friendly organization.
Jessica said, “I’ve been trying to accomplish something like this ever since my mom died and I lost the home I needed to go to.” And now? He has that feeling again. You are at home. 💕
You deserve to prosper
If you struggle with clutter—especially as someone with ADHD—you’re not alone. Your home should support the way your brain works, not work against it. All of these home improvements were proof that with the right techniques, patience, and a little fun, any place can go from chaotic to calm.
