Spring cleaning may be behind us, but summer shedding is just beginning. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the chaos that has crept in during the cooler months—or maybe you just want to reclaim your space before the frenzy of back-to-school hits—this summer room-by-room decluttering is for you!
Garage/Sheds/Basements
Even if you don’t have a garage, yours spend or the basement or the attic it may be your dumping ground and now is the time to face it head on. And if it’s something you forgot you had, you probably don’t need it. Be brutal!
Declutter This:
-
Outdated or duplicate chemicals (think motor oil, sprays, yard treatments)
-
Home project leftovers (random tiles, extra shelves, paint)
-
Broken or unnecessary tools and gadgets
-
Used or unused sporting goods
-
Random cords, chargers, hoses—if you don’t know what they’re doing, throw them away!
Entryway and mudroom
This place becomes a cemetery and a coat museum if we are not careful. So here are a few things to look at and sort out to make room for what you really use this season.
-
Old flip-flops and mismatched shoes
-
Shoes and clothes for older children
-
Coats and jackets are torn, out of style, or don’t fit
-
Reusable shopping bags (keep only a few favorites!)
Backyard and Outdoor Storage
Whether you have a patio, deck, or just a small patio, outdoor activities add up quickly! And let’s face it – it’s hard to relax and enjoy the great outdoors while staring at mountains of clutter. Here are a few things you should separate for the season:
-
Expired sunscreen and bug spray
-
Moldy or sharp pool toys
-
Grimy BBQ tools (hello, tetanus risk!)
-
Double or broken plant pots
-
Coolers you don’t use
The kitchen
Your fridge, freezer, and freezer deserve a little summer love too.
Declutter This:
-
Freezer-burnt burgers or stale popsicles
-
Outdated condiments (especially milk or egg-based dressings)
-
Take sauces and condiment packets
-
Pantry items that are old or not
Tip: Use bins to mix condiments together so you can easily take them on the go (and easy to throw away too!)
Closet Clean-Out
It’s time to wear this lifestyle and that means if it doesn’t suit your body or your lifestyle, why is it still hanging around? Time to finish:
-
Irregular clothes (no more “someday” pants!)
-
Clothes that wrinkle easily or don’t make you feel good
-
Shoes that hurt, slip, or just don’t fit
-
Duplicate or “meh” pieces.
- Bathing suits you don’t like (or have lost their elasticity)
Paper Clutter
Paper is one of those things that tends to accumulate quickly! At this time of year, it’s good to go through and throw away:
-
School artwork and calendars from earlier this year
-
Flyers, expired coupons, and catalogs
-
Notebooks, random scribbles, and papers you no longer need
Tip: For keepsakes use a simple bin to store them and leave the rest guilt free!
