QUESTION: Hi Bill, I really want a hairstyle that will suit my face shape (long), my age (41), and my lifestyle (active) without getting old. I work with challenging hair textures—naturally curly. My natural hair color is messy, but I keep it light.

Should my hair be short with bangs? Should I grow it? Thank you! -Dee
A: Dee, thank you for sending in your request for a hair consultation. I think you are on the right track with your short hair idea. Short hair will make your smile and jawline pop, and it will frame your beautiful eyes.
I think this sports cut will work well for you:

The length should go near the top of your ears, with long bangs sweeping across the forehead and down to the cheekbones. The layers shouldn’t be cut too short—you want to keep some fullness, as this will help balance the shape of your face.
It will look good with your natural wave. To wear it straight, it will only take a few minutes with a flat iron:

As it grows, you can rock a long “bixie” style (halfway between a pixie and a bob). Your natural curls are perfect for this cut:

A short bob like this is another option:

I would recommend trying this look after you’ve had your way with short hair, as you’ll need to grow out your current ear-length layers to achieve this.
Here’s a version with curls and soft, textured ends:

Also, notice the deep side part that sweeps across the forehead. This is the key to a long face shape as it visually “cuts” some length.
I also love this classic, one-length bob of yours:

This cut can create the illusion of a shorter face shape, as the widest part is below the ears.
And this is another long, layered style, that you can wear in a ponytail:

As for your hair color, I would like to see your hair much darker than what you have now. Your super-blonde is very light, and brings out the red tones in your skin.
This dark blonde can make your skin glow:

I hope this will help give you ideas for a new way of looking.
