A few years ago, we went from using a spice cabinet to storing spices in the kitchen cabinet next to the stove. While having a spice cabinet has been the perfect solution for us, I know it won’t work for every kitchen area. I’ve seen other spice storage ideas that provide easy access to a variety of kitchen configurations.
I’ve put together a list of different spice organization ideas and I hope you find one that’s perfect for your kitchen!
Before we get to the individual spice jar ideas, I wanted to share two other ways to organize other spices as they are also an important part of cooking.
First, we add a lazy susan on the table near the stove to the things we use almost every time we cook, like salt, pepper, avocado oil and olive oil. Using a lazy susan or a small tray quickly makes a random collection look cohesive and purposeful.

We also have many additional spice mixes, oils, vinegar bottles, etc., because we like to try new things. All of our spices are in the cupboard you’ll see when we get to the list of great ideas below, but sometimes people wonder what to do with some of the more important items, like All Bagel seasoning.
I added clear drawer organizers to the bottom two shelves of our top drawer. They’re perfect for small pockets and bottles, and double as a drawer. I can pull each one forward and easily grab anything behind.

Spice Storage Ideas
I’ve divided the list into a few spice organizers you can buy, followed by spice racks put together by talented DIYers. So whether you want to keep spices on the kitchen counter or tucked behind a cupboard door, there’s an idea below!
You can click on any of the options to learn more and see the full tutorial.
Purchased Spice Organizers
A few basic spice storage solutions can be purchased and are up and running quickly.
Next, as I said, our entire collection of spices was moved to the cupboard. I used matching glass spice bottles with flat sides so they don’t tip over. They’ve been sitting on the shelf for a while, but putting them in this organized closet organizer helped keep everything on track.
I chose to put the organizer and spices in my drawer to the side because it allowed the font to be larger on my labels. But, these empty spice jars come with cute labels, so you don’t have to DIY it yourself. Regardless of how you decide to label, I highly recommend going with square jars all around. They will sit better and save space because they fit closer together.

Using the inside of your cabinet doors is one of my favorite ways to add storage space to the kitchen. Jen used beautiful acrylic spice racks to organize all her spices in beautiful jars in one of her kitchen cabinets.
You can also put these spice shelves on the kitchen wall.

If you don’t want to give up a drawer but still have some cabinet space available, my friend Katie tested out a U-shaped spice organizer that turned out to be a great way to get more access to spices.

This beautiful test spice rack can be a great solution for small kitchens where space is at a premium! It takes up less countertop space, but still holds 10 different spices and doubles as a garnish. It’s also a great way to save money because you can pick up a small amount of spices in the bulk section to fill test tubes.

Hybrid Purchased / DIY Option
The last option on the list is a small hybrid option. You can buy a magnetic board and spice containers, but Jessica shows how she customized magnetic spice jars for easy labeling.
As an alternative to metal cans, you can also add magnetic strips to the lids of baby food jars and use those instead of store-bought spice cans.
