6 Guest Room Essentials I Put In Every Bedroom When I Host

Guest room with cozy lamps, pillow mist, fluffy duvets

Whenever we have people over, I go through the same short mental list of guest room essentials – a few things that turn a nice spare bedroom into a room where someone actually sleeps well and feels cared for. And this summer I had many opportunities to test it.

Iron Bed | Curtains | Floral Pillowcases | Sheets | Duvet Cover | A dress

Our Merrimore House renovation is scheduled to begin in November, but we plan to use the lake house to the fullest this summer – squeezing in every minute of lake life while we can. The house came fully furnished, which was such a gift in terms of getting it right away to enjoy, but I’ve been trying to make things feel better for us in this middle class. I started simple, just changing the throw pillows on the beds, and eventually moved on to bigger changes, bringing in a few pieces from our Pottery Barn collections. We added this bed to one of the guest rooms and swapped out the dining table for this one, and they both made such a difference.

But besides making the house feel personal, I’ve been thinking a lot about our guests – and how to make them as comfortable as possible while they’re here. A guest room doesn’t have to be big or fancy to feel like a little retreat; it often comes down to waiting for the little things that people forget to pack. So here are six guest room essentials that I put in every guest bedroom.

Rothy's The Cozy Clog in Cookies and Cream Bouclé

Cozy Clog in Cookies and Cream Bouclé

I absolutely love these clogs which I have in five colors – they are incredibly comfortable and a great slip-on house shoe, although you can wear them outside too. I ordered a variety of men’s and women’s sizes to keep on hand, so guests always have something warm to slip into before heading down to breakfast.

Sleeping pillows make such a difference. I ordered two sets of these for every guest bed, so there’s enough to go with a book or snuggle up at night.

Utopia Down Alternative Put a duvet

Utopia Down Duvet Insert

This is a duvet insert that I have bought many times and failed. It’s completely fluffy but still light, so it doesn’t sleep too warm.

Boll & Branch Waffle Bed Blanket

Waffle Bed Blanket

This is a lightweight all-season blanket that I swear by. Cool in summer, warm in winter. It’s that essential layer you hope is in every guest bed you sleep in – in case you’re not a duvet person, but a sheet is so light!

Pottery Barn (US) Chris Loves Julia Luggage Rack

Chris Loves Julia Luggage Rack

Even if your guest room doesn’t have a closet or dresser, you’re fine if you have a place to put your luggage. Friends can live out of their suitcases for a few days as long as that suitcase is not on the floor!
