Graphene, 'Temperature Adaptable' Airgel Sleeping Bag: Graphene-X Tardigrade Lite First Look

Sleeping bag padding usually comes in two forms: down or synthetic – each has its own advantages. Both, however, are static insulators, which means they are resistant to temperature changes. Recently, Graphene-X launched a new sleeping bag on Kickstarter that uses “Weather Adaptive Insulation” (WAI), which it says can “think for itself” and adapt to warm or cool temperatures.

The technology has already won the brand an ISPO award for its insulated jackets – now, it’s using it in the Tardigrade Sleeping Bag.

Aside from the insulation, the Graphene-X Tardigrade Sleeping Bag offers several other simple design features. It comes in two temperature ranges – Extreme (rated at -22 degrees F) and Lite (rated at 14 degrees F) – each with a graphene lined toe box, armhole sleeves, and a soft fleece hood.

How the insulation adapts to the changing temperature remains to be seen. But so far in testing, this unique bag has proven to be very warm and weather resistant.

With the Kickstarter goal exceeded by 11 percent, it’s clear that there are plenty of people interested in the Graphene-X Tardigrade sleeping bag and the potential its technology can provide.

Tardigrade: The Most Advanced Sleeping Bag

Named after a small animal that can survive in some of the harshest conditions on Earth, the Tardigrade Sleeping Bag is part of a three-part sleeping system. The Tardigrade Sleeping Pad can be slid into place with expandable slots on the back of the bag to hold it in place. There is also a Tardigrade Modular Cover which increases the temperature of the bag on very cold nights.

I have only tested the Graphene-X Tardigrade Lite Sleeping Bag from this system. However, the sleeping pad holder with mesh back is compatible with some (but not all) sleeping pads from other brands.

GRAPHINSULATE & WAI

The star of the show is the sleeping bag. Graphene-X uses what it calls GRAPHINSULATE in Tardigrade, the brand’s proprietary blend of polyester synthetic insulation infused with graphene and aerogel. According to the product, graphene distributes heat more evenly than synthetic insulation alone, and airgel traps heat at a molecular level.

The Tardigrade Lite I tested has 80g/m² of GRAPHINSULATE, while the Extreme has 150g/m².

Wrapped in GRAPHINSULATE insulation is what Graphene-X calls WAI. In warmer temperatures, these airgel tubes automatically “melt,” allowing excess heat to dissipate. In colder temperatures, they “puff,” creating more organized baffles and an expanded layer of air that holds more heat.

This technology is used in the Graphene-X AeroGraph jacket line and received the brand’s 2026 ISPO Innovation Award. With Tardigrade, it is put in a sleeping bag for the first time.

Building materials and design

The Tardigrade bag is made from a 40D nylon ripstop outer, making it durable and water resistant. The hood and draft collar are lined with soft fur that feels great on your face and neck. The main zipper runs over the top of the graphene-lined toe box.

Two zippered arm holes on the sides of the bag allow you to put your arms out to read a book, grab things, or eat a snack without removing the bag completely. They double as hot spots. A fidlock clip at the neck rounds out the design, allowing you to use the main zip as a vent. Easily clips and clips with magnetic closure.

Unlike the rest of the bag, the foot box is not insulated with GRAPHINSULATE. Instead, it is coated with graphene, a material used by NASA. In testing, I had no problems with my feet being colder than the rest of my body. But in winter conditions, I wonder if the graphene lining will be enough to keep my feet warm. However, I haven’t had a chance to test this in cold weather.

In the position

I tested the Tardigrade Lite bag on a 4-day bike trip through the Canyonlands in May. It was very crowded. This bag is incredibly warm, and given the 30-40-degree nights, I couldn’t tell how much it was regulating my temperature.

I ended up on top of Tardigrade most of the time. I’ve used 15-degree bags on 30-degree nights before, and frankly, I’ll tell you the Tardigrade feels very warm. This bag packs heat.

In terms of weight, I wouldn’t call this a backpacking sleeping bag. On my kitchen scale, it came out to 56.5 ounces (3 pounds, 8.5 ounces) – that’s pretty much in line with sleeping bag weights. I would have only packed a Tardigrade for a backpacking trip if I had known it would be like this it’s cold.

This sleeping bag seemed to be similar to other synthetic bags in terms of packaging. A squeeze bag allows you to squeeze it down to a manageable size. However, it is not as depressed as the real low.

The paddles all had a smooth action and were easy to use. Larger zipper tabs help prevent folding, which is common with many lightweight bags that use regular zippers. I enjoyed not being overly cautious about zipping in and out to answer nature’s call at night.

Graphene-X Sleeping Bag: Who is it for?

I still need to do some cold weather testing with the Graphene-X Tardigrade Lite Sleeping Bag to confirm many of the product’s claims. But its GRAPHINSULATE technology has already won awards and proven its effectiveness in branded jackets. So, I’m excited to test this bag more in places with big temperature swings this summer and next fall and winter.

The Kickstarter campaign for the Tardigrade Sleep System had an initial pledge goal of $20,038. As of this writing, it’s at $227,023, and it’s fully funded as of June 14. The brand notes that you can still make a “Latest Pledge for available rewards.”

For campers who spend a lot of time in cool or cold conditions, this bag can be a good option. If the temperature-regulating qualities prove to be as effective as Graphene-X claims, it could be an excellent choice for camping in areas with large temperature fluctuations and different climates.
