Marmot AirFleece Performance Full-Zip Hoody Review

The seams are low-profile and comfortable, so there’s no chafing or chafing when wearing the under-pack –

The Bottom Line

The Marmot AirFleece Performance Full-Zip Hoody (men’s/women’s) is a competitively priced, ultra-comfortable mid-layer fleece that balances functional warmth and excellent breathability. Its comfortable and skin-friendly flatlock seams make it easy to wear under a heavy backpack, while the durable jacquard grid fabric is seamless without chafing.

A well-fitting hood needs to be zipped up at the chin to keep you protected from high winds. And the breathable thread sacrifices wind resistance. But this 10.2-ounce layer is a rich option for travelers looking for reliable shoulder-season coverage that transitions well from the trail to the city.

The breathable inner fabric combined with the breathable outer fabric means the jacket is excellent at shedding excess heat –

Warmth

The insulation in this jacket comes entirely from its 100% recycled polyester grid jacquard fabric. Unlike a puffer jacket that relies on loose interior filling, such as down or synthetic fibers stuffed into the chambers, this jacket’s insulation is built directly into the knit.

Polyester jersey fabric is woven into a unique checkerboard grid pattern. And the high-rise squares trap the body’s heat. At the same time, the small channels that run between these squares allow excess heat to escape, balancing the effective warmth you want in the fleece and the air you need to stay comfortable.

We found that the insulation works very well. Because the cut is less fitted than competitors, it creates a larger pocket of dead air on your body. When we stood still, we found that this caused a lot of motionless warmth, especially in the chest and body.

The fabric channels work well to keep it breathable. We found ourselves very pleased with how much excess heat was disposed of during our rapid ascent. However, this came with a tradeoff: warmth in the air. Because the checkerboard weave is so focused on airflow, we’ve found that strong winds can cut through the material and dissipate some of the accumulated warmth.

During springtime in Pennsylvania, we found this refreshing. However, we would hesitate to access this jacket in really cold conditions without a windproof layer on top.

Comfort

Comfort is where AirFleece shines as a functional piece. The comfortable, unlined silhouette means you don’t get that constricting feeling common in other athletic wear.

It is very soft to the touch. It felt so good against bare skin that we often wore it directly over a short-sleeved t-shirt without needing a long-sleeved base layer underneath.

Marmot has used flatlock seams on the shoulders and body of the jacket, and we noticed this when we loaded the backpack on top of the fleece. Flatlock seams are a type of sewing where two pieces of fabric are joined at the edges without overlapping. This creates a perfectly flat seam on both sides, thus eliminating any friction, friction, or hot spots from the rubbing of the backpack’s shoulder straps.

While the hood has an amazing surface, it doesn’t have a good way to lower it, so it will take your head off unless you zip the jacket up –

Strength

Given the visible holes in its jacquard pattern for maximum airflow, you’d expect the AirFleece to be delicate. But its durability in the field is impressive. We put this jacket through light backwoods in dense, thorny trees in Central Pennsylvania, and it held up well.

Although the loose weave of the fabric tends to catch debris, which left us with a few embedded pine needles at the end of the trip, the coat’s fabric was undamaged. We checked the jacket after the hike and found no thread pulls or annoying loop snags.

Weight

Weighing in at 10.2 ounces, this hoody sits comfortably in the mid-performance category. It effectively splits the difference between ultralight grids and bulky camp sweaters.

Because its warmth comes from the use of textured grid lines instead of a dense fabric mass, it provides plenty of insulation without feeling heavy or the weight of your layering system.

Features

This jacket comes with a hood, cuffs, two zippered waist pockets, and a zippered chest pocket. Additionally, the coat has a full length zipper that runs the length of the body.

We found many of these features to work very well. We love the jacket with the thumbs up, and the fleece fabric was so durable that we didn’t have to worry about the material being damaged by the palm. Zip pockets are always included. We love the ability to hide things like phones, wallets, or keys in a place we can be sure they won’t let them fall.

The only complaint we had was the lid. Although roomy and comfortable, it fits loosely unless we zip the jacket up to our chins. In hot conditions, we found that the hood tended to blow over our heads.

Patagonia R1 Air Review: The R1 also features a breathable, mesh fabric designed to quickly dissipate excess heat when climbing. However, opt for the R1 for a more balanced, athletic fit that’s more compact under the technical outer shell.

External Audit Power Review: Vigor also includes lightweight mesh fabrics designed to reduce bulk while still providing adequate coverage for active outdoor sports. The Vigor maximizes this breathability while also lowering the price tag, making it ideal for high-output, budget-sweating jobs.

REI Trailmade Fleece Review: Trailmade Fleece also features a comfortable, non-restrictive, zip design that works well in outdoor settings and casual environments. Trailmade might be a better option if you’re looking for a budget option, as it offers a lightweight layer without charging a premium.
