Tent Finder has just received a major upgrade. In addition to 5 questions, you can now fully chat with an AI assistant — ask anything in plain language and get expert recommendations drawn from our independently reviewed database of 350+ tents.
When we launched Tent Finder earlier this year, the goal was simple: stop making people spend hours reviewing references to choose a tent.
Answer five questions, get the same. It worked, and thousands of people have used it find the right tent outside the usual research rabbit hole.
But the question has limitations. Sometimes you don’t want to answer set questions — you want to ask your own. “What’s the best backpacking tent for two under $300?” “I need something waterproof with an easy setup for camping with kids in the Pacific Northwest.” “How does the Big Agnes Copper Spur compare to the MSR Hubba Hubba at this price point?”
Those are not filter questions. Discussions. So we built the next layer of Tent Finder: an AI chat assistant that lets you ask exactly that.
Just Ask Anything

The new AI chat lives at wildernesstimes.com/tents/ask/ and it works as you hope.
Type a question in plain English — but you wouldn’t say it naturally — and the assistant returns handpicked tent recommendations from our updated database, with full scores, details, prices, and links to where to buy.
You don’t get the standard answer that is put out on the internet. All recommendations made by the contributor are based solely on the Wilderness Times tent website — if we haven’t reviewed it, it won’t recommend it.
That means you always get results backed by our independent 7-point rubric, not whatever is trending or sponsored.
Two Ways to Find Your Tent

Tent Finder now works in two ways. Use whatever fits your thinking:
5 questions (first) – Answer five guided questions about your type of trip, group size, budget, and priorities. Great if you’re looking for a quick, organized recommendation and don’t know where to start.
AI chat (new) — Ask anything in simple language. Best if you have specific questions, want to compare tents directly, or already know what you want and want to dig deeper.
These two methods are not muted – effects flow between them. Start a conversation in AI chat, then switch to quiz view to see your matches in a more intuitive format. Or run the questions first and use AI to drill down on any result.
Built in Every Tent Review

Each tent review in Wilderness Times now has an “Ask our AI” button.
Click it, and the AI dialog opens a preset with that tent already in context — so you can quickly ask follow-up questions without having to type in the tent’s name or describe what you’re looking at.
Example: you are reading a review of the Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL3. He likes it but wants to know how it holds up in heavy rain compared to something solid.
Click “Ask our AI” and ask exactly that – the assistant already knows which tent you’re asking about and can pull similar options from the database instantly.
What’s New in This Update

- Discussion recommendations — Ask in plain language. Find handpicked selections with scores, specifications, prices, and review links, exclusively sourced from our curated database.
- Comparison in place – Ask the AI to compare any two or more tents side by side. Generates a full comparison table using our scoring data for 7 criteria.
- Contextual information entry points — “Ask our AI” on any tent review starts a conversation with that tent so you can ask follow-up questions without starting from scratch.
- Email my selection – Create a shortlist during your chat and get your top tent options emailed to you for easy reference when you’re ready to buy.
- Ongoing discussions – Chat history is saved for all sessions. Come back tomorrow and pick up where you left off.
- Built-in appliances – The assistant stays on topic, he never makes explanations or values, and he is always transparent about the method based on his recommendations.
The Way We Built It

The AI interview was trained on data from the Wilderness Times 300+ tent database — the same database that powers the 5-question quiz.
The assistant is instructed to show our editorial voice and methodology: he refers to our points and the combined owner feedback instead of looking for a manual field test of all the models in the database.
That last point is important. Assistant won’t tell you that the “stormproof” tent is based on nothing – it will tell you that the tent scored 4.2 out of 5 for weather resistance on our rubric, and that owner reviews regularly says it holds up well in heavy rain. It exposes what it knows and how it knows it.
“The questions were a great first step. But the question we kept hearing was ‘is there anything I can ask?’ – and the answer is now yes. The AI knows all of our tent databases and can answer questions that we wouldn’t expect with a preset filter. This is a very different type of tool. ” – Matt Blake, Managing Editor, The Wilderness Times
Equal Independence. You are now in Chat Form.
Everything that made Tent Finder so trustworthy in the first place is still true here:
- No sponsored placements.
- There are no brand partnerships that influence the results.
- There are no tent recommendations that we haven’t independently reviewed and scored.
The AI dialog is a better interface to access that same database. Whether you choose to answer five questions or have a conversation, you get the same personalized, rubric-based recommendations — in a format that works best for you.
