It’s officially Jute Season

Somewhere in the past year, I had the feeling that it was a “summer slipcover.” Not literally, though I wouldn’t rule it out, but the idea. It is a British habit of the country house to dress the room differently in summer. Lighter fabrics than heavier ones. Dark woolen rugs were traded for lighter jutes. Flowers where wood used to be. Same room, wearing different clothes. You don’t redecorate, you don’t apologize for black walls in July, you just put a season on them.

The first thing I change? Terraces in the living room and dining room. So I call it: This is the season of jute rugs.

Rue Olive / Sage

In many of our Chris Loves Julia x Loloi collections, we like to have some options in wool, jute, or cotton: natural fibers that we love for their beauty, durability, and (most importantly) durability. The fabric should stay with you. And jute is the one that earns its place every summer. It brings texture and warmth without weighing the room down.

We have three jute lines in our CLJ x Loloi collection, and each one solves a slightly different design problem. Here’s how we think about them, and how they can work in your home!

Judy Rug: The Classic One

Judy Natural/Elephant

Judy is her name’s play on its main fiber (jute, get it?), and she’s been a favorite of this collection since the day it launched. Hand-woven from jute, cotton, and other fibers, jute gives you that grounded, natural look you want in a custom-made rug, and cotton softens it so it doesn’t feel scratchy underfoot. A geometric pattern is quiet enough to slip under anything, but it’s also the kind of pattern that won’t go out of style on you. Judy is a modern artist.

Rue Rug: Romantic

rue Moss/Blue

Oh, Rue. How we love you. We created Rue as a way to take that beautiful jute-cotton blend and dress it up with something out of a storybook. Botanical and organic patterns: think English cottage, think floral-print blooms, think the kind of rug that makes you want to put fresh flowers everywhere. Handwoven in India and GoodWeave-certified, which I love being able to say. And because it’s soft and low bulk, it slides nicely under the dining table without feeling noisy. (Pair with a non-slip rugby pad and you’re good to go.)

Fletcher Rug: Basic

Natural Fletcher/Elephant

If Judy is a quiet horse and Rue is a romantic one, Fletcher is a chameleon that can work with any design style. The large window print has a real physical presence, but sits inside a real jute weave that supports whatever environment it lives in. The all-jute Fletcher is what I always reach for when I’m looking for a room to feel purposeful but understated. Dining rooms, hallways, bedrooms, living rooms – they find it everywhere.

If you’ve been waiting for the right time to bring jute into your home, consider this brand for you. We’re heading into the part of the year where everything wants to feel a little lighter, a little more light inside. A large jute rug does a lot of the work for you before you start decorating around it.

Tell me in the comments: which one did you watch first?
