Your Gaming Chair Is The Reason Your Back Hurts Every Night

With most toy products, you can feel the difference in a good way. A gaming mouse has many buttons. A gaming headset has better sound. However, when it comes to gaming chairs, the opposite is true. If your back hurts every night after sitting at your desk, your gaming chair is probably the reason why.

TL;DR: 20 second decision

I’ve tested both entry-level and high-end sports seats, and the verdict is the same in all of them: they’re built for the racing simulator, not the workday.

  • Good: They look the part, and the Secret Lab Titan is the best version of the concept.
  • Cons: Flat backrests, restrictive bucket seats, and basic postures will hurt your back during a full day of work.

Bottom Line: Spend the same money on an ergonomic chair and you will feel the difference by the end of your first day.

1. Back Support

Simply put, sports seats do not support your back. In both chairs, the back is completely flat and does not offer any curve to naturally fit your spine. Their solution is an inexpensive lumbar pillow designed to provide support. Unfortunately, the pillow compresses easily and doesn’t stay in place. What it really does is force you to sit forward rather than supporting your lower back.

It’s hard to even sit all the way back in the chair to get any lumbar support. Basically, you have to force yourself back into the chair, which is just uncomfortable. If you invest in the more expensive Titan, you’ll get one of the only gaming chairs that comes with adjustable lumbar support. You can move the support up and down and out and out, which I like, but you still have to deal with a flat backrest.

2. Functional Design

Finally, the bucket seat design common to gaming chairs is useless in an office environment. For comparison, we’ll be looking closely at the GT Racing seat, which retails for $110, and the Secret Lab Titan seat, which will cost you $500-$600. The Secret Lab chair is widely considered to be the best gaming chair on the market and while I agree with this assessment, it is still a problematic chair.

Sports seats were originally designed to match the racing simulator setup. That’s why some of the first racing seats are called DXRacer and NeedforSeat. The idea was to create the same feeling you would have when driving a sports car. However, in an office environment, a gaming chair removes the ergonomic benefits of other chairs and creates an uncomfortable experience.

Both of the chairs we’re going to look at feature a classic bucket seat design with accented bolsters on the sides and open edges on the seat. While the seat seems wide, you are actually very limited due to the padding that covers the solid metal design. The sides of the seat are firm and not comfortable to lean on.

The same goes for the side bolsters in the back seat. Once again, you are very limited. As a 5’9″ person, the bolsters hit my shoulder and I can’t use the seat comfortably. If you upgrade to the more expensive Secret Lab chair, the problem is solved because they eliminated the metal from the chair. However, the back features the same restrained design.

While the design may help protect you when driving a racing car, it does nothing but make you uncomfortable when used in an office environment.

3. Range of Motion

There has been a big movement in the ergonomic chair industry to create flexible chairs that allow you to move and stretch while in the chair to promote better circulation and comfort. With the bucket seat and rigid design of the sports seats, you get absolutely no freedom of movement. You will be in a fixed position and the seat will not bend or bend at all.

4. Lack of Corrections

The lack of adjustment will be a problem for most gaming style chairs. Almost all seats come with a low-level device. Typically you’ll find a medium or medium recline design, which means you sit from a position directly under your seat. This makes it a very difficult way to stay seated. You have to make a lot of effort to sleep because there is no weight distributed on the back of the cylinder.

In addition, without synchro-tilt, your knees are raised as you sit and can hit your desk. With the Titan, there is an improvement in the knee tilt, which is better, but still not the best in ergonomic technology.

We also found that many seats do not have slides and headrests. You will be stuck deep in the seat. Instead of headrests, some seats will come with a pillow for your head, but you won’t get any reclining features. Some special adjustments like forward seat tilt and two-way lumbar support are not available on sports seats.

5. Poor Warranty

Gaming chairs often come with bad warranties. For example, the GT seat only offers a 1-year warranty. The Secret Lab chair comes with just three years of installation. In my opinion, both manufacturers are also using a shady tactic to force customers to sell seats. If you upload a picture of the chair with a review on social media, the companies will extend your warranty. GT goes from one to two years and SecretLab goes up to five.

This is something we only see with sports seats mainly because it is bad business practice. Most reputable companies will simply offer a full warranty without advertising. Ultimately, you’re better off spending your money on an ergonomic chair than a gaming chair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are sports seats really bad for your back?

A: Yes, and I think it’s one of the most overlooked issues in home office setups. The backrest is flat, the lumbar cushion compresses quickly and doesn’t stay in place, and the bucket seat design limits how you can sit. There is no real ergonomic engineering in most of them. Q: Is Secret Lab Titan different?

A: It’s the best gaming chair I’ve tested, and I agree with that reputation. But it’s still a gaming chair. The flat backrest is still there, the restraining back bolsters are still there, and at 5’9″ it hits me on the shoulder. The knee recline is better than most gaming chairs, but it still falls short of what a good ergonomic chair does. You are paying $500+ for a seat that is still in danger.

Q: What should I buy instead of a play chair?

A: Anything from the ergonomic side of the market at the same price. The Steelcase Think, the Haworth Zody, or the old refurbished Steelcase Leap V2 will all support your back far better than any gaming chair in the same price point. You also get real endorsements – not the social media image gaming chair brands use to increase coverage.

Q: Why do sports seats have such bad warranties?

A: It’s a red flag I always point to. The GT seat gives you one year. Secret Lab offers you three. But both will extend the warranty if you post a picture of the chair on social media. Real ergonomic products don’t do that. They just give you a full warranty. The fact that gaming chair companies have to promote advertising in order to unlock basic installation tells you everything about where the brand’s priorities lie.

Q: Are there any gaming chairs that you should buy?

A: If aesthetics are important to you and you do a lot of gaming, the Secret Lab Titan is the one I would recommend. But for everyday office work, no. The price you pay for a gaming chair makes you a great value for an ergonomic chair. The design is not built for it.

The Bottom Line

The gaming chairs look the part but don’t do the job. If you spend eight hours a day at a desk, you deserve a chair designed for that. Spend the same money on an ergonomic chair and you won’t go back.
