Mina The Hollower hits Xbox this week, and is Metacritic's 'Best Game' of 2026 So Far

Game of the Year contenders are not slowing down right now! Following the likes of Forza Horizon 6 and 007 First Light getting some amazing updates in the last few weeks, Me The Hollower sounds like another Xbox title worth playing.

We talked about this game recently — the new ground-up action game from the creators of Shovel Knight — and they were talking about it as “one of the highest-grossing adventures ever” ahead of its release May 29.

Turns out they were right! Here’s a look at some of the amazing reviews of Mina The Hollower so far:

IGN (10/10)

Even if all you’ve played is Breath of the Wild and Elden Ring, don’t let the retro look fool you: Mina the Hollower will scratch the same itch, with an open world full of mysteries to discover and fun, clever combat that I can’t get enough of. A great game in a small package, and a perfect adventure masterpiece.

Mina the Hollower is an almost flawless game that combines elements of the nostalgic classics we know and love with a healthy dose of the Yacht Club’s expertise and creativity to make it something that truly stands out as a retro masterpiece. I could honestly play it forever, with Yacht Club proving that it’s not just a one-game studio and a bonafide classic.

Mina the Hollower is as dense as a holiday fruitcake and usually surly. I was reminded many times of last year’s Hollow Knight: Silksong. Mina the Hollower is missing that it’s tough, and can be softened to your liking, but it feels like it has that level of polish to its challenge. It’s very rewarding and equips the player with fun ways that were always satisfying to mix and match, and the gauntlets of my unlockable tools are always testing me in new and exciting ways. Mina the Hollower is a rewarding adventure to the end, and thanks to extensive fixes and New Game+, I expect I’ll be very excited to see what we can do with this amazing adventure for a long time.

Yacht Club Games has successfully transitioned from a Mario-inspired space to a Zelda-style adventure, delivering yet another retro-styled masterpiece. Mina the Hollower is a complex, challenging but accessible adventure full of content, set against an 8-bit gothic backdrop.

Mina the Hollower is one of the best indie games I’ve played in a long, long time. It borrows familiar ideas from Zelda, Dark Souls, and a million others to make it your own, and gives you endless choice and variety in how you carve your way through its world. It’s an unusual contribution to classic games that often surpass the quality of the titles that inspire them.

Mina the Hollower looks like a throwback, and there’s no doubt that it is, but its thoughtful design and heightened sensitivity make it play and feel like a modern video game – one that’s taken appropriate lessons from the medium’s history.

The more I explored this world, the more things I found that I admired. This world is so well designed, and connected, that the fact that I don’t like some of the choices made by the developers isn’t fun. This is a great game, but you have to work on it to see what makes it so special. It’s worth the effort, and I really hope players stick with it and see all the good things it has to offer.

As you can see, the verdict is pretty good for Mina The Hollower right now, the Metacritic rating is sitting pretty amazing. 93 (for PC), making it “the best game this year” according to the website as things stand.

What’s even more surprising is that it launches for just $19.99 on May 29, so you won’t have to break the bank to add it to your Xbox library. Check out this Game of the Year candidate in just a few days on Series X and Series S!
