The decision

An intelligently designed air purifier, the Dyson HushJet Purifier Compact HJ10 does not take up much space but can clean rooms up to 100m2. It’s also very durable, with the main filter lasting five years before it needs to be replaced. In my testing, this cleaner proved to be fast and quiet.

  • The electrostatic filter lasts up to five years

  • It was very quiet

  • Cleans the air quickly

  • You need an app for all control options

Main Features

Introduction

Dyson is by no means new to the world of cleaning, but in homes, it’s focused on fans of multi-purpose cleaners. The Dyson HushJet Purifier Compact HJ10 is unique, as it is a single-purpose cleaning tool.

Shaped like a jet engine, this compact purifier stays out of the way and effectively cleans the air of pollutants. Touch is more expensive than most of the competition, but its quiet operation, powerful performance and smart app make it more affordable than some of the best air purifiers on the market.

Design and features

  • Jet engine design
  • Simple controls
  • Works with the MyDyson app

Although Dyson’s multipurpose fan purifiers (or even heater-heater purifiers, like the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP1) are great, not everyone wants more features and can only choose a dedicated purifier, which is where the Dyson HushJet Purifier Compact HJ10 is.

Although built with Dyson’s usual quality and attention to detail (and available in both white and the black/teal version I have for review here), the Dyson HushJet Purifier Compact HJ10 is designed to be out of the way, and can be placed in the corner of a room or next to a piece of furniture.

Interestingly, this is a product that can be hidden, doing its job of purifying the air while sitting in an invisible place.

The reason the Dyson HushJet Purifier Compact HJ10 can be taken out of the way is because of its design. The air is drawn to the sides, and through the filters, and then the clean air blows straight up, so that you don’t get cold air.

You’ll notice that the top of the cleaner looks like a jet engine, which is where the inspiration came from. It’s not just about looks, as the cone helps the purifier quietly expel air.

Dyson says this cleaner can deal with rooms up to 100m2which is a lot larger than many cleaners of this portable size, such as the Levoit Core 600S. Effectively, you can use the Dyson HushJet Purifier Compact HJ10 in any space in a normal home.

Inside the purifier there are two filters: an electrostatic air purifier 360 and an activated carbon air filter 360 + odor air filter. The latter is for gas and odor, and must be replaced every year (£35). Amazingly, the electrostatic filter is designed to last five years (£50 to replace), lasting longer than traditional filters while still being able to absorb 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns – that’s everything from mold spores and dust to pet dander.

While Dyson’s fans are all remote controlled, the Dyson HushJet Purifier Compact HJ10 has physical buttons on the front, indicating its precise function. In most cases, you probably won’t even need to touch the controls, since you can leave the purifier in automatic mode, where we use its PM2.5 and PM10 sensors to detect the level of small particles in the room, and adjust the fan speed accordingly.

Buy a more expensive Dyson purifier fan, such as the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde, and you get a wide range of sensors, including NO.2 and formaldehyde, so the cleaner can react to a wide variety of contaminants.

Using particle sensors only saves money, and most household pollutants are carried by small particles, which this cleaner will sense. And, while working, it will deal with odors and even gases, such as NO2.

On the front control panel, there is a power button to turn the machine on and off. Next to this is the fan speed button, which cycles between the three available fan speeds (low, medium and high) and the automatic mode.

In addition, press and release this button when the moon icon appears, and the cleaner will switch between normal operation and silent night mode.

There is also an ‘I’ button that rotates the screen between information screens, showing a general air quality graph, as well as detailed information on PM2.5 and PM10.

Connect the Dyson HushJet Purifier Compact HJ10 to the MyDyson app, and you can remotely control and program the device, and get Alexa voice control. While the app duplicates what’s available with the front controls, it offers a wider set of fan speeds (10 in total), as well as a sleep timer.

The app also shows the current air quality, and I can turn on continuous monitoring, which allows the purifier to keep tabs on air quality even when it’s turned off.

Working

I’ve had the Dyson HushJet Purifier Compact HJ10 running in my office for a few weeks to see how it reacts in a normal environment. As I’ve found with previous Dyson purifiers, the HushJet Purifier Compact HJ10’s sensors are excellent, picking up changes in atmosphere and fine-tuning fan speeds.

For example, my long-haired cat came walking into the office, and a few seconds later, the Dyson HushJet Purifier Compact HJ10 increased its fan speed slightly to deal with the particles in the air.

It shows that the Dyson HushJet Purifier Compact HJ10 can be left to do its job automatically, and that there is no need to set the fan speed manually.

With its low fan speed, I rated the Dyson HushJet Purifier Compact HJ10 at 34.8d to 37.9dB, so I couldn’t hear it with normal background noise. At medium speed, the 37.9dB I registered was from a mild background hum. At maximum speed, at 53.3dB, the fan is loud enough to be heard but certainly quiet enough that the Dyson HushJet Purifier Compact HJ10 is not annoying to be in the same room.

To test the performance, I lit a smoke pellet, which burns for 60 seconds and is a source of particles. It didn’t take long for the Dyson HushJet Purifier Compact HJ10’s sensors to pick up the change and crank the fan speed up.

I timed how long it took for the X-Sense alarm to say the smoke level was safe. This took a speed of 9m 15s. It took another 4m 13s (13m 28s total) for the Dyson HushJet Purifier Compact HJ10 to register normal air quality again, which is very fast.

Final thoughts
