All the brands are making foldables right now—but most of them are expensive knockoffs. So when Nothing comes up with something different, it’s worth paying attention to. Today, I’m introducing the CMF Flip 1, a concept flip phone that doesn’t try to hide how it’s made—and may actually make folding more accessible in the process.
It still has that satisfying clamshell snap (very Motorola Razr nostalgia), but everything around it feels purposeful—and modular.
If this thing ever makes it to market, it could change our expectations of a flip phone entirely.
Why Foldable Phones Already Feel Overpriced
Right now, foldables are only available to people who can’t afford to spend thousands on a phone—or those who don’t want a serious device. During that time, each brand refined the formula in its own way—large screens, thin hinges, book-style folding—but in the end, consumers were left with a phone model that had no middle ground.
That is a problem. Obviously people want something that can be folded—it’s fun to shut up. And that front screen that doubles as a cover? Super simple.
Still, few thought to offer a cool-looking mid-folding display—the very thing that made the original Razr so popular in the first place.
What is the CMF Flip 1 Concept Phone?

This is where the CMF Flip 1 gets interesting.
As a concept from Nothing, it’s not trying to compete with the Galaxy Z Fold7 for polish, or the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold for screen size. Instead, it relies on what Nothing does best—a very slim design, discrete construction, and a folded shape that looks very useful.
On paper, it’s still a full smartphone experience, with a large touchscreen when open, a compact clamshell form when closed, and a second external display for quick viewing.
But seen in this rendering, the foldable becomes a stylish everyday device.
Visual Design and Modular Construction
This is where the CMF Flip 1 really sets itself apart. Those interchangeable back covers, and tool-free parts point to a modular design. It’s not always said that people should be able to fix their phones. Will it give us the first modular foldable phone?
I don’t see any screw on my Samsung. So the first customizable, customizable phone would be great. Now, to be real with you, Nothing has been mum about the details of the CMF Flip 1. Its website and Instagram only show pictures of the concept phone.
But suffice it to say, I would totally settle for a phone like this.
How Modularity Can Make Folders More Affordable

Most smartphones today are expensive not just because of what they do, but because of how they are built. Folders take that complexity and multiply it—hinges, folding displays, reinforced structures, precision sealing.
The CMF Flip 1 looks to simplify the design and reduce unnecessary layers. That doesn’t guarantee a cheap phone—but it removes many of the reasons for them to remain locked in a high-priced space.
Could This Change The Future Of Smartphones?
Of course, it’s still just an idea. There is no guarantee that something like this will ever be presented as shown. But the CMF Flip 1 takes the foldable phone into new territory. It’s a reminder that foldables don’t have to live forever in the luxury category. They may be easy. Another fix. And yes, it can be very affordable.
If the smartphone industry starts taking that idea seriously, we could finally see foldables go from a new place to something that makes sense for everyday users.
