The Art of Matching Wallpaper and Rugs: 16 Combinations We Love

Charming dining area featuring a round table, upholstered chairs, and vintage wall art, perfect for family gatherings and entertaining guests.

When we started designing our daughter Greta’s bedroom, we kept circling back to two questions: what happens on the walls, and what happens under the bed? Because that’s how we think in almost every room now. The wallpaper sets the mood, the wardrobe supports it, and when those two play well together, the whole design kind of falls into place.

There is a quiet magic to fixing these two. So we lined up our CLJ x Loloi rugs next to A-Street Traditional wallpaper and WallPops Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper and started playing matchmaker – arranged in the way the patterns play out. (New to this? Start with our guides to choosing the right wallpaper and choosing the right size for your site.)

Pair Bright Wallpaper + Floor Rug

Moody wallpaper calls for a rug that knows when to retreat. This black damask wallpaper speaks volumes with a dark background and flowers painted in sage and warm gold. The CLJ x Loloi border rug responds quietly below, with layered neutral lines that pick up the same gold tones as slate without echoing the austerity. A classic move: let the walls be bold, and let the rug form the base.

Soft attitude, same principle. This smart and cream floral wallpaper has the beauty of a garden print to it, all peonies and ferns painted in ivory over dusty green. The CLJ x Loloi rug leans right into that romantic register. Tonal rust lines set the creamy field, and the scalloped edge adds enough appeal to feel purposeful without competing with the flowers above. Hard walls, low carpet, but make it beautiful.

This one plays with comparison. The peel-and-stick wallpaper has a whimsical read – trailing wildflower vines in muted pinks, yellows, and greens on a deep navy background. The Loloi carpet below goes full architectural, with a frame-within-a-frame panel design in green and terracotta. The low structure balances the looseness of the walls, and the muted pinks of the flowers are echoed in the tonal borders of the rug.

Maximalism meets minimalism. The wallpaper is a full scene: an oxblood background, a succession of botanicals, and birds sitting on leaves. The Loloi rug pulls the exact opposite lever: a quiet field of cream with subtle tonal striations, without whispering underfoot. When the walls are rich in this matter, the function of the bed is to give your eye some place to rest. This is a good practice.

Pair Vintage Wallpaper + Bright Rug

Let’s investigate the text! In this case, the common wallpaper is a quiet player: a soft grass cloth that reads as solid from the rest of the room. The CLJ x Loloi rug is becoming a big event. A faded navy, rust border, vintage Persian pattern with just enough wear to feel right at home. When the walls are delayed, a rug like this becomes the personality of the entire room.

Chris loves the Julia Mycroft Slate Wallpaper and the Jules Ocean/Spice Rug

Mycroft Slate Wallpaper | Jules Ocean/Spice Rug

The classic wallpaper here is a trompe l’oeil take on dark wood panelling – moody, masculine, all shadow and deep – and the CLJ x Loloi rug plays nice with its pale cream ground and intricate floral medallion pattern in dull greens, rusts, and soft golds. The walls bring gravity; the rug brings detail and light. It’s research in contrast that still feels collected.

Textures, always! A typical wallpaper reads like horizontal bands of weathered stone or driftwood, featuring soft grays and blues with a fluid, streaky movement to them. As for the CLJ x Loloi match? It responds to its textual language: a natural jute field with a trailing border of colorful flowers on a muted slate that takes up the cool tones of the wallpaper. Neither one is loud, but they both have something to say.

Peel-and-stick wallpaper is the classic line of the grain sack – soft rust lines on a creamy ivory surface, all with gentle rhythm and restraint. The CLJ x Loloi rug layers on a checkered border against a charcoal platform for a crisp clear time underfoot. The two patterns do not compete because the stripes are vertical and airy, the checks are geometric and concentrated. Simple conditions, big impact.

Matching Organic + Geometric Wallpaper and Rug Styles

Organic meets geometric, and meets color. Traditional wallpaper is universal. The peacocks sit in a dense vegetation of ferns, seed pods, and leaves stylized in sage, taupe, and gold against black. While the CLJ x Loloi rug brings a clean harlequin grid structure to the same sage and cream palette. The shared colors allow a variety of shapes to do the job: curves at the top, diamonds at the bottom. It’s how you get a pattern game that feels composed instead of chaotic.

One is decorated, the other ends up being important. The common wallpaper is a full Jacobean damask, consisting of scrolling flowers and scalloped medallions in taupe, cream, and slate on a dark background. Meanwhile, the CLJ x Loloi rug responds with a very simple geometry: a soft tone checkerboard in two shades of sand neutral. The check feels almost modern compared to all those traditional details on top, but the shared neutral palette keeps them in the same conversation. Fix it on the walls, it’s easy on the floor.

Chris loves the Julia Collins Charcoal Wallpaper and the Calvin Pebble/Ivory Rug

This peel-and-stick wallpaper is a botanical twist of sage and taupe laurel branches. The CLJ x Loloi rug counters with a broken brick pattern in soft sand and cream that reads like a modern basket weave. The organic sway of the foliage is reinforced by the strong rhythm of the rug’s lines, and the muted neutral palette allows both patterns to breathe. Nature on top, structure underfoot.

“An Arts and Crafts-style block print and refined jute flow into the room…” Plain wallpaper turns birds, flowers, and foliage into an ivory-toned slat that feels like it belongs in an English country cottage. The CLJ x Loloi rug sports a surprisingly sharp counterpart — natural jute crossed with a subtle gray plaid that picks up the depth of the wallpaper. The curves above, the grid below, and the shared moody neutrals hold it together.

Pattern Matching in Carpet and Wallpaper Patterns

Two patterns, two cultures, one room. The traditional wallpaper is a classic toilet – cranberry trees and romantic landscape scenes on an ivory background. The CLJ x Loloi rug combines it with a similar vintage-style Persian pattern, but in a cool dusty blue with warm tan accents. The trick here is that both pieces are based on inheritance, so they read like a stack rather than a conflict. Pattern matching works when patterns have a history together.

Tone and tone wallpaper, matte finish. The common wallpaper is dense scrolling flowers in deep aubergine and dusty mauve. It provides a rich, supple, almost velvety feel. The CLJ x Loloi rug delivers a soft counterpoint with a vintage medallion bathed in sage, cream, and pops of terracotta. The wallpaper fill sits high where it can really sit, and the soft palette of the rug keeps the floor feeling open.

The peel-and-stick wallpaper is a pomegranate pattern with a deep forest green background, poached fruit, dusty blue berries, a slight rust sheen. Meanwhile, the CLJ x Loloi rug softens the entire design with distressed florals in warm taupe and cream. The wallpaper carries all the richness and detail. A worn, almost sun-kissed quality gives the room a certain airiness. A pattern in a pattern, but one of them whispers.

Chris loves the Julia Melograno Cinder Wallpaper and the Palma Brown/Earth Rug

Melograno Cinder Wallpaper | Palma Brown/Earth Rug

Quiet geometry above, painted pattern below. The sheet and stick wallpaper is a blue-grey ogee tone – a subtle, almost embossed, kind of pattern that reads like texture from a few feet away. The Loloi rug goes in the opposite direction with a vintage inspired design in rust, faded denim blue, and cream. The restraint of the wallpaper is exactly what allows the closet to be bigger and clearer.

Here’s what we’ve learned from a lot of testing: there’s no perfect formula for this, just a few principles that keep emerging. Let one feature lead. Leave it to someone else. Share the color strip between them. Trust that a little intensity (bold versus calm, curves versus grids, pattern piled on pattern) is often what makes a room feel collected instead of plainly decorated.
