A desk pad protects your desk from the things you put on it. It prevents scratches and keeps your desk looking good. There are many desk pads out there, so it can be difficult to choose. I decided to shop 5 of the top rated desk pads on Amazon to find out which one is the best. When building your workspace, a good desk accessory like a quality desk pad can make a dramatic difference in how your setup looks and functions.
After testing five different desk pads on multiple categories – flatness, smell, writing, spill resistance, and durability – I found clear winners. Spoiler: budget-friendly PU pads outperform premium options in most real-world tests. Whether you’re looking to improve your desk setup or keep your space scratch-free, there’s a pad for every budget.

1. Searching for the Best Desk Pad
I started my search on Amazon like most people. It is an easy way to see all types and types of desk pads. I found that most are made of the same PU material. They were cheap and all looked like real leather. Most if not all desk pads have had high reviews and customers were genuinely happy with them.
I bought 4 different mats including Aothia, Ysagi, Knodel and Towwi. I wanted to explore the differences and similarities. One thing I was curious about was how well they slept when unboxed. All but Ysagi sat down and laid on the desk for the rest of the day. Ysagi had small bumps on the mat that didn’t go away.

The next test I wanted to try was a smell test. Towwi had a strong ink-like smell and Knodel and Aothia were neutral. Ysagi, on the other hand, had a strange smell and was frankly the worst of them all.
2. PU Pads
In all other tests, the PU pads had similar results. The Knodel desk pad was a great example of this. I would recommend that PU pads are the only ones you can write on. However, if you push too hard, the pen will go through the paper. These pads also win the spill test, so they’re easy to clean if a coffee cup ring is left behind.

The texture of these mats is all smooth and allows the mouse to move easily. I also noticed when I dropped something heavy on the mat, it left marks at first but disappeared within minutes.

The Gallaway Leather Desk Mat is a great option as well. It looks premium without breaking the bank and feels softer than others. The only problem with this is that my pen went into the paper and left marks on the pad when I dropped my utility knife on it. This is the only carpet that left marks after weeks. I would recommend this product to anyone who wants to add a classy look to their desk setup. When you pair a desk mat with other Amazon desk accessories you should buy, the Gallaway is a good fit.
3. Ktrio Gaming Desk Pad
In addition, we have a desk pad specifically for gamers called the Ktrio Gaming Desk Pad. Mouse scrolling and control are two of the most important things when it comes to gaming so having a good product is worth it. This pad ranges from $14-$19 and has a 4.8 star rating. The only negative review is that the pad never lies flat, there will always be a corner or part of it that folds.

The mouse glides much better than any other mat I’ve tested so that’s a win. It also passes the drop test. No sign of marks or creases. I would say it failed when it comes to cleaning up the spill. Unfortunately, my pen went through the paper easily so you may need to use the desk area instead. As for the coffee cup ring, it didn’t end. Not only is this a gaming pad, but it can also be used for photoshop editing. It’s important for my mouse to slide easily when I’m editing a photo.
4. Grovemade Desk Mat
This desk pad runs around $160, now this may sound expensive and to some it may be, but is it worth it? I believe this one is more for looks than function. Many of my tests have failed and I will explain why. Writing is very difficult because of the material. There is some flow to the mouse, but it’s not consistent enough.

I wouldn’t suggest getting a coffee mug on this desk pad because if it isn’t cleaned fast enough, it will sink in. Weeks later, I could still smell this coffee place. Another issue I have with the pad is how easily the pad slides and stretches on the desk. This may bother me as I like a desk pad to just blend in with my setup. When you dropped something heavy, it didn’t leave marks so that was an advantage. If you want to know how this compares to other top options that offer great value in their price point, Grovemade is a top seller for everyday users.
The Bottom Line
In general, all these pads have their similarities and differences, but PU pads seem to be leading. They are cheap and have passed many tests above all other desk pads. Desk pads are a great accessory to have to set up your desk so don’t hold back from trying one.
