'Samson' and 'Xbox' Were Trending This Week, But It Got Off to a Rough Start on PC

A few weeks ago, we talked about a game called Samson that might get an Xbox version, and how it seemed to be getting a lot of hype before its release on April 8.

Well, it’s now April 9th, and the first review of Samson on PC has been surprisingly difficult so far. It has an “Average” rating on Steam as things stand, while its Metacritic rating is a low 48 at the time of writing.

If we look at some of the negative reviews, most of the criticism comes from its gameplay that seems repetitive and dull, as well as a series of technical problems and a story that is said to be “dreamy”. Others are very impressed with the game though, and a “very helpful” review on Steam right now describes Samson as “surprisingly good” and “a no-nonsense, straight-to-the-point PS3-style / beat-em-up driver”.

However, the developer answered the answer, promising future improvements:

“We’ve had a lot of fun watching people have fun with the game and release a game that’s flawed for a number of reasons. Early impressions are mixed and many of you are experiencing game-breaking issues and performance issues. That’s unacceptable and we’re listening to everyone’s feedback and working hard to deliver a game that we’ve spent years of our lives developing. Team Launch has a proud mission to improve our game. From seeing Samsoni from its original concept, to release.

We are committed to the future of both Samson and Tyndalston and the sport will grow over time in all areas; quality, gameplay and content. Thank you all for supporting us and sticking with us on this very exciting launch day. We will continue to keep our ears to the ground and improve the game with your support.”

So, what does this mean for us as Xbox console owners? It it should that means, whenever Samson comes to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, we’ll be getting a much better game than the one that launched on PC this week. The dev also revealed that the big episode will be released this Friday on PC, and that’s just the beginning!

It could also indicate that we will be waiting a long time for the Xbox release date. Before the release, the team said that “the next step is up to you” and that they will “go straight into finishing the console versions as the game does”, but the most important thing after the launch will be to polish the PC version before the console release.

“As the game plays out, we’re moving straight into finalizing the console versions. No dates yet. We’ll be clear when we know – open and honest as always.”

Whatever happens next, Samson looks like one of those games that will benefit from more time in the oven before coming to Xbox consoles, and hopefully will see its potential further down the line. The concept is cool, the price is good ($25), and now we hope to fully enjoy it sometime in the future on Xbox.

Apparently there was a need for it this week, as evidenced by some of the “growing questions” for Xbox and Samson on Google in the last 24 hours. Will this trend continue following these mixed reviews though? That remains to be seen.
