65mm Accuracy Performance and Field Testing

The Maven CS.1A 15-45×65 Spotting Scope is Maven’s mid-range spotting scope designed to bridge the gap between heavy-duty, high-magnification scopes and compact, travel-friendly scopes.

Built on the same platform as Maven’s C-series binoculars, the CS.1A features Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass and Schmidt-Pechan prisms with phase correction apertures to maximize light transmission and color fidelity; if I were a glass master, I’m sure these would mean even more to me, but as specs go, they don’t sound bad.

The 40.4 oz (1,145 g) CS.1A has a 65 mm objective lens and 15x to 45x magnification range housed in a magnesium and aluminum frame. Measuring 11.4 in (29 cm) in length, it is marketed to backcountry users where packing space and weight are primary constraints. The scope is IPX7 waterproof (can be submerged in water at 1 meter for 30 minutes), nitrogen-purged to resist fogging, and includes a single-speed focusing mechanism.

Evaluation Criteria

I tested the Maven CS.1A – 15-45×65 Spotting Scope on goat hunts in the Chugach, caribou hunts in the Brooks Range, black bear hunts on the Kenai Peninsula, and even ptarmigan hunts in all those areas. Throughout that journey, this place saw sun, rain, snow, and sub-zero temperatures.

Good

The size

When hunting big game, I carry 10×42 binoculars in my chest pocket 100% of the time, and I use them all day. But simply how the Maven CS.1A 15-45×65 Spotting Scope sets up is small enough to fit in and out of my pocketI found myself reaching for my glasses more often at the start of a viewing session than my binoculars. The entire unit measures just 11.4 x 5.6 x 3.1 in (28.96 x 14.22 x 7.87 cm).

Weatherproofness

When hunting goats with the Maven CS.1A 15-45×65, I flipped my boat and lined it up at speed. This field was in my pocket, tied to the ban. Everything else in my bag was rolled up in a contractor’s bag except for this scope, and that was it under water for 10 minutes. A little water seeped into my contract bag, but it was there no fog within range.

Engagement Rings

One of the worst things about a scope is not being able to find the target quickly because of a sticky or loose dial. The Maven CS.1A has a rubber magnifying ring, which is very absorbent under the eye piece, smooth as butter and it doesn’t change when you install the glass. When it came out at 70°F/21°C, it curled as easily as at -15°F/-26°C.

Field of View

At 15-20x the CS.1A’s image is sharper and brighter than my binoculars, even on an Alaskan morning. The field of view is not that wide, but it is close. And being able to dial up fostering after getting a pet meant I had access to this space every so often.

The Okay

Weight

At just over 40 ounces (1134 g), the Maven CS.1A 15-45×65 Spotting Scope is Up to 45x the scope of company growth it offers. That’s why I went with this range – not because it’s a budget option or because I like simplicity. Having a few ounces (567 g) in your pack when you hike 24 miles to the Alaskan backcountry means packing an extra day of food, or better rain gear, without a weight penalty. However, lighter options are available with similar fixed lengths. I would really appreciate it if this scope was 6 ounces (170 g) lighter. That’s 2 king size Snickers bars or extra socks. But I guess I’m just thankful that the Maven CS.1A isn’t $3,000 either.

Bad

Haze at 45x

The one limitation of the Maven CS.1A – 15-45×65 that has come up consistently is the full 45x mag. With good lighting, it’s manageable – you can still select features and do basic testing. But in flat light, early in the morning, or looking in a shadowy area, that darkness takes away the contrast you need to judge an animal. I found myself rarely using a scope above 30x, which is the sweet spot where the glass stays clear. If you go in knowing that 45x is more than a usable setting, you won’t be disappointed. In its effective magnification range of 15-30x, this scope exceeds its price and weight class.

The decision

Can the Maven CS.1A 15-45×65 Spotting Scope tell you if that white spot is a goat or a sheep from 5 miles away? Yes.

Can you tell if that goat is a buck or a nanny from 500 yards (457 m) away? No.

This space saves you a lot of walking and helps you cover ground quickly thanks to its lightweight design. But if you want an optic that gives you the confidence to zero in on the first animal you see from a few miles away, you’ll need a higher quality glass with more magnification.

The Maven CS.1A is the perfect phone for the weight-conscious hunter who needs a capable, reliable sight that won’t slow them down. It’s not the range you use to calculate the distance – the range you use to decide if it’s worth covering the distance at all. For many DIY wilderness hunts, that’s exactly what you need.
