What Plus Sized People Should Consider When Buying a Mattress

Mattresses are expensive, and they are designed to last. If you have a body of your size, like me, you need to think about comfort, firmness and the right support, to ensure that you sleep well, protect your physical health and save money by changing an inadequate mattress in a short time.

What Plus Size People Should Consider When Buying a Mattress

The Importance of High Density Foams and Rigid Coils

If you are buying a mattress for a person’s size, the strength of the material is important. The superior foam resists deep dives, and holds its shape for a long time, ensuring that your spine is supported all night, every night.

Hybrid mattresses give you the comfort of a foam mattress but with a firmer coil core. Hybrid mattresses for heavier people use heavier coils, or higher gauge coils to give you firmer and more stable support, while the top foams provide relief from pressure on your joints.

Look for specific features like 5 lb/ft³ (or higher) foam density and reinforced coil systems, which give you thicker foam layers and stronger coils for better durability.

When choosing a memory foam mattress idea, look for denser memory foam rather than softer foam layers. Memory foam supports your body, without locking you in one place, especially if it sits on top of a thick coil, or rigid memory foam.

Edge Support And Why It’s More Important Than You Think

The edge support of the mattress affects how much of the mattress you can safely use. With weak edges on the mattress, it can make sitting up, getting in/out, or sleeping close to the side feel a little unstable.

Mattresses with individually wrapped coils, or a reinforced perimeter will give you the best edge support. You want the sides to feel firm and supportive, to help prevent sagging at the edges over time.

The edge support on the mattress also affects the firmness and value. If you have a mattress with poor edges, it will feel cheap and wear out quickly.

When checking out a mattress in the store, sit on the edge and lie down near the side. Check if the mattress lifts you up, or falls down.

Cooling features and temperature control

If you can, look for a mattress with active cooling features, especially if you get hot while sleeping, or if your body weight increases heat build-up.

You can get cooling blankets, gel foam, breathing coils or phase shifters to help remove heat from your body.

Foam mattresses can make you feel very hot during the summer months, so imagine how hot it is when you sleep.

Choosing a hybrid mattress with coils and cooling comfort layers is best. Coils improve airflow, while gel or latex-encased layers add cooling and pressure relief.

If you suffer from back pain and extra weight, look for a mattress that is labeled heavy-duty, but also lists neutral or cooling properties.

For heavier side sleepers, look for pressure relief and cooling, in balance. Soft upper layers will protect your shoulders and hips, on top of a supportive (and breathable) base.
