Undoubtedly, time itself is a matter of form and function, but when it comes to reading time during outdoor activities, a proper field watch is the way to go. For more specialized uses, there are smart and diving designs, but we still associate them with the general term “area watches.”
To stand up to years of use, whether for work or pleasure, a watch needs a rugged case, bold numbers that you can read in the dark, and an overall aesthetic that you’ll be happy to have on your wrist every day. For us, several Vaer watches check all those boxes and then some.
Below, we present a few of our favorite, outdoor-friendly watches from Vaer. We’re impressed with their durable construction and heavy-duty take on traditional styles. Then there is the value that we always value. You’ll find that several watches come with a choice of quartz or automatic movements, as well as different colors and band styles.

Vaer watches
The founders of Vaer, Ryan Torres and Reagan Cook, used different elements of wristwatches before starting the company in 2015. Ten years later, the watches were mostly assembled in Los Angeles, where craftsmen set each part by hand.
As you look at the watches selected below, you will notice subtle differences in the shape of the case, the placement of the crown, or the fabric used for the band. These options help define the overall aesthetic of the watch, while the materials tell another story. In particular, the brand’s field watches draw on US military history, from the choice of hard-wearing metals and glass to the typeface and size of the numbers.
C5 Tactical Field Solar 40mm: $349

This solar-powered version of Vaer’s best-selling C5 Tactical Field Solar is no stranger to gear enthusiasts. It sits on the wrist of one editor at GearJunkie who praises its value by including “high-end features such as solar charging, 10-level water resistance, excellent lighting, dual straps, sapphire crystal, and precision quartz movement. The USA integration and lovely strap add to this beautiful watch that can be worn many times — or taken down — to match many times.”
The C5 Tactical is a 10ATM military-inspired watch with a “dark” aesthetic, contrasted by its bright and durable paint. Just 6 hours of sunlight will provide a 6-month battery life, and it can also be recharged from other light sources.
Like the Vaer C5 model, this 40mm case watch stands out for its seaworthiness (100 meter depth rating), low case design, and accurate (and affordable) quartz movement. It draws inspiration from the A-11 field watch worn by American soldiers during World War II, with large hour numerals and 24-hour and 60-minute exposure markers on the inner and outer dials.

C4 Tactical Field 41.5mm: $479

The C4 Tactical Field Watch is a new addition to the Vaer lineup, with a larger and more waterproof design than the C5. It represents an aggressive and functional design, boasting 200 meters of water resistance, a diameter of 41.5mm, the brightest lume of the product, and a non-linear rotating bezel to enhance its usability. Like all its solar models, the C4 can deliver 6 months of storage from just 6 hours of light, and charge from any light source (even candlelight).
We see the C4 Tactical as the perfect fit for anyone looking for a bold and rugged wristwatch with a wrist to match. It pays homage to the military watch tradition with a matte finish to kill the visual, oversized hands, and bold numbers drawn from US Air Force stencils. It uses a reliable (and inexpensive) quartz movement.
“A tool watch that’s been assembled all over America, but still looks good enough for everyday wear,” summed up one GearJunkie editor. You can read more about the Vaer C4 Tactical in their full review.

G5 Pacific Steel GMT 39mm & G5 Pacific Polar 39mm Automatic: $935

The G5 Pacific Steel GMT is Vaer’s most advanced, American-made, 1950s-inspired 20ATM automatic watch. Like the G series model, this watch is part of the brand’s dual time zone series, known for its sea-ready functionality and self-winding movement.
Vaer makes the G5 with a quartz movement, but the highest touch is the automatic setting for those who want the timeless traditions of a mechanical movement. For that, it uses the well-thought-out Miyota 9075 movement, which includes a True GMT date function. It supports a time tolerance of -5/+15 seconds per day and holds a power reserve of 42 hours.
One that seems to be a nitpick among washi aficionados is the brightness and longevity of their glitter markers. Vaer painted the lume to the thickness of the G5 line, rating it a 9/10 on his scale. That comes from 15 pieces of Old Radium Super-LumiNova on the dial and Old Radium lume on all the hands.
With its 39mm case width, Vaer hopes to hit the mark between ergonomics and a proud appearance on the wrist. It also has a lug diameter of 20mm and a depth of 11.83mm excluding the crystal.

G2 Pacific Steel GMT 39mm: $399

The G2 Pacific is an essential take on the G5 Meridian GMT automatic, with the same classic look and Vaer’s trapezoidal markers and BGW9 Super-LumiNova markers that are super bright. It has a 39mm stainless steel case, a stainless steel GMT bezel, and a sapphire crystal. The main difference is the Swiss Ronda quartz GMT movement, which reduces costs and periodic maintenance.
This is a great watch for travelers who enjoy accurate timekeeping across all time zones, quality construction, and attention to detail. Vaer likes the 39mm case size as a balance of ergonomics and prominence on most wrists. Having said that, we think it’s a reliable watch, with modern styling and Vaer’s attention to detail. Already flexible, it can change its appearance when paired with different bands.

DS2 Meridian Black, Navy, or Green 42mm: $259

Based on a 1970s military diving watch, the DS2 Meridian 15ATM watch is a sea-ready tool with a reliable, classic Japanese Quartz movement under $300. It is made of 316L stainless steel and has a screw-down crown. The lightweight case (70.6 g) is slim with water resistance up to 150 m, and has rounded edges for a functional yet comfortable fit while surfing and diving.
The DS2 Meridian is available in several colors, which stand out against a classic steel band or contrast nicely with a khaki fabric band. (Vaer currently includes a free silicone dive band with orders.) The 42mm case is Vaer’s largest watch option and is recommended for someone with 7- to 9-inch wrists who likes a modern, prominent fit. There are also 39mm case styles available.

D4 Meridian Black 39mm: $399

The D4 Meridian Solar dive watch boasts 20ATM water resistance with a high-lume display on its bezel and face, which sits behind a solid sapphire crystal glass. The coin-operated bezel grip and curved hubcaps were inspired by military watches from Rolex and Doxa in the 1970s. The case is a riff on the Omega Seamaster military case.
This D4 Meridian Solar stands out in particular as one of Vaer’s first field watches that can charge with ambient light. That helps enable the movement of quartz, even at extreme depths, to keep time close. Vaer delivers all of this in a dive watch priced under $500. Available in 39mm and 42mm sizes, it’s perfect for someone who works or plays on the water and appreciates modern features behind its classic look.
