“It’s funny, because I’ve found that the longer I make skin care a priority, the less makeup I wear,” says Anne Hathaway. “There’s nothing wrong with wearing makeup, I actually wear it a lot in my job, but I find that in my life I’m happier being in my own skin,” she explained. Vogue.
The 43-year-old recently made headlines for her defiant looks—and part of it, at least, is good skin care.
It started with him The Devil Wears Prada days. “I worked with a 20-year-old actress, and I always thought skin care was important, but I saw how she removed her makeup at the end of each day. And it was a layered process. Cleaning her skin was a layered process, and something clicked for me. And I started treating my skin gently with more consideration, with more thought. And the effect was profound for me.”
Another reason for his dedication is because of his active skin. “I make time for it, first of all, because I have sensitive skin. So, not making time means that my skin will be really stressed in the long run. I would never describe my skin as very well cared for, but care is involved.”
He is also loyal to his long-time partner, Su-Man, whom he has seen for more than a decade. (He once described his treatment as “a life-changing experience.”)
However, Anne is rarely specific about what she uses. For years, she preferred to keep her skincake a secret—at one point even making her own products and eschewing plastic containers. But in 2023, she became a global ambassador for Shiseido, calling the brand “thoughtful,” “smart” and “refined.”
Here’s what we know about his process so far.

1. Makeup Remover

Kopari
Coconut oil: “The thing is, with a low plastic life, I have to choose what’s important. I recently did a photo shoot with crazy eye makeup and temporary eyelashes stuck under my real lashes. I couldn’t wait to take them off, but my makeup artist was like, ‘Oh, I don’t know how they come out.’ You probably want to get rid of fat. I came home with an old eye makeup remover, but it wasn’t oil based. So to avoid buying a lot of products in plastic containers, I used coconut oil, and it worked. I always have coconut oil with me because I use it on my body.”
2. Lubricant

Shiseido
Shiseido Vital Perfection Uplifting and Firming Advanced Cream: “Skincare is very personal, but I’ve found that a good quality moisturizer is essential. I love the Vital Perfection Uplifting and Firming Cream, which I use at night. First, it has a smooth texture and a pleasant fragrance with deep hydration, a unique Vital Perfection.”
6. Lip Balm

Food
“For my first meal, I try to buy food that doesn’t come packaged. In addition, I try not to eat red meat, I also try not to eat pork.”
Water
“I mean, you can’t go wrong with water. If you have it and it’s clean, you’re very lucky. So, hydrate.”
Quitting Alcohol
“I don’t often talk about it, but I have been sober for more than five years.
Exercise
“I was not born with great strength, but because of the sad state of my life, I have worked [steadily] in the last few decades. Between four and six days a week [I do] resistance training, HIIT ballet and Pilates.”
Yoga
“I try to do yoga three or four times a week.”
Attitude
“Despite some of the messages that we—especially women—have been exposed to, age is not just a barrier to self-growth and development. The way I feel about it at this stage of my life, is that there is no ‘superior age’ that should be valued more than any other. I hope that we always become more ourselves. I feel that it is important to be lucky enough to be lucky enough to live a long time.”
