As more people rely on simple methods of grooming, foundation sticks are back in high gear. Although it is not a new concept, it seems that many brands are releasing them this summer, but the new Foundation Stick seems to be a unicorn in the sea of launches.

For just $6.99, this drugstore foundation stick has 43 gorgeous shades in a vegan, cruelty-free and oil-free formula. The official claims are a versatile, creamy and easy to blend formula to a soft matte finish. Besides, there are no promises about aging time or performance… so you know I had to check it out!

The essence Foundation Stick is very creamy while still feeling lightweight. It glides onto the skin without tugging and blends well with a brush. The coverage looks natural, although it’s very draining in the middle. It will even help your complexion, although very dark spots may appear. For me, this is enough coverage for everyday, casual wear. I don’t often go for full coverage, except for special events, but this gives me enough foundation to support a light makeup look.

Shade 120

One thing I wasn’t a fan of: the smell. This has added a floral vibe to the scent. Especially as someone with sensitive skin, I try to stay away from using heavily scented products. It’s not something you can smell while wearing it, but I get a waft of it when I open the cap of the foundation stick.

Despite the product calling this a “soft matte”, I have to wholeheartedly disagree. To be honest, I have combination skin with an oily T-Zone (forehead, nose, and chin). However, I felt like it started to look pretty shiny, even if you use a mattifying primer.

Left Side: Powder + Setting Spray / Right Side: Setting Spray Only

I tested the essence foundation stick in two different ways: one side with the powder + setting spray, and the other side with the setting spray. On both sides, the application remains exactly the same after 11 hours as when it was first applied. On the powder side, I didn’t feel any creasing in my lash lines, but on the non-powder side, I saw very little marks—much less than many of my favorite liquid foundations!

However, I’m shiny on both sides—even with a mattifying primer and powder. I also felt like the powder foundation ended up accentuating some of the texture of my acne scars.

Those with oily skin don’t like it look an oily person will probably have a hard time with this one. With that said, I feel like this is a solid choice when it comes to a stick foundation, especially for the price. You actually get 10 grams of product, which is more than most new drugstore sticks, and an amazing value. I feel this one will work best on normal skin, and combination if you don’t mind a little shine.

You can find the essence Foundation Stick at Ulta Beauty.
