Q: Hi Bill. I am open to any suggestions you may have for a cut and color that would suit me. I have pale skin and blue eyes, and my hair color is currently auburn. My natural color is greenish brown. I’m thinking about switching to a brighter lighter hair color.

My hair texture is fine and curly, with a natural uneven curl that I straighten with a round brush every day.
My biggest complaint is that my hair doesn’t always hold up. Whether I blow dry it straight or use a round brush to curl it under, it will blow under no matter what.

I would greatly appreciate any advice you may have. Thank you! — Carey
A: Carey, thank you for submitting your request for a hair consultation. I’m sorry you’re not happy with your frizzy hair. I find it very attractive in you. It does wonders for your jawline, as it recedes into a beautiful position to frame your face
That said, if you are dead set against a flip, then the only way to pull it off using your current styling method is to cut your hair above your shoulders. If it hits the shoulders, it’s game over… the flip happens.
All of these pieces would suit you well:

There is no guarantee that your hair will behave perfectly at short length. However, with this cut, any pieces that end up sticking out will look sleek and modern—not retro.
Besides, if you have switched to a curly look, this styling method should not cause a twist, especially if you take the length above your shoulders:

Since you already have a natural curl, you can take it out and lift the volume with the help of a curling iron, hot rollers or a vibrating tool. Avoid air-drying with a round brush, which brings about a flip.
To make your curls last, use a setting spray before heat styling. This will help lock in your curls and make them last longer. Be sure to let your curls cool before you run your fingers through them, then finish with a firm hold hairspray.
You mentioned that you are considering a lighter hair color with highlights. Fine, curly hair does not take bleach well, and can be very dry. A rich, strong color like this strawberry tone would be your best bet:

This can be very good for you. However, I know that if a woman wants highlights, she wants highlights….
Here are some highlights made with a lighter shade of color, not bleach:

This technique will work well for you. However, if you end up cutting your hair short, continue to use bleach. It will take less time to grow and it is easier to just cut off any damaged hair.
I hope this helps in your quest for beautiful hair.
