Blendtec was founded in 1975 by its parent company, K-TEC, after the release of their first multi-functional kitchen device, the Champ. Since then, the company has continued to innovate and innovate and is based in Orem, Utah.
The company is responsible for some advancements in the commercial and home assembly area, including the ability to control motor speed with a microprocessor, direct assembly cycles with automatic start and stop, and safety shutdown features.
With the latest release of their digitally controlled models, Blendtec has eliminated the need for knobs and switches making cleaning a breeze, and microprocessor-controlled cycles allow precise speed and time settings to be set resulting in better blending.
Blendtec is probably best known for its viral video campaign, “Will It Blend?” where CEO, Tom Dickson, demonstrates the power of hybrids by combining anything from iPhones and iPads to a garden horse. If this blender can handle these crazy things, it can handle your smoothie.
What makes Blendtec Different?
When considering a high performance blender, the two most important decision factors are:
- Interface controls
- Power
There are many other things that one might say are equally important, such as warranty and accessories. But at the end of the day, what most people consider important is this:
- How easy and simple Do you use a blender every day?
- How are you doing? mix my ingredients?
Blendtec Interface Controls
One of the unique things about Blendtec is that their interactive controls don’t use knobs or switches. Instead, they rely 100% on the flat screen control system. A flat screen comes primarily in two styles:
- Flat Push Buttons
- Touch screen
Why a flat screen instead of traditional buttons and knobs?
- Cleaning is easy
- Less chance of breaking a machine button or knob
1. Flat Push Buttons
Below is an example of the flat buttons for the Blendtec Classic 575 model blender. There are no knobs or switches, and even the buttons aren’t the usual button type. Instead, the surface is flat, so it is very easy to keep clean.
2. Touch screen
Instead of a knob, Blendtec includes a slider system. An example of Blendtec Designer 725 controls shows Slide. With it, they can dial different speeds by sliding their finger on the bar under the interface with 8 illuminated white dots.
The Designer 725 Touchscreen also uses a 100-speed slider. To move the speed, you just slide your finger on the bottom bar (the one highlighted with 8 white dots), and it controls the top screen to choose different speeds such as slow on the left like Stir or Chop and speeds on the right like Blend and Puree.
3. Programs
Unlike Blendtec, all of their blenders come with programs. Programs are nothing but settings set to combine certain types of recipes, such as Smoothies, Salsa, Ice Cream, etc. These are the buttons that make using the blender every day a breeze. Many people refer to it as “Set and Forget” buttons.
The most important things the programs do is make it easy to get repeatable results in your recipes.
I mainly make frozen fruit smoothies using Almond Milk as my liquid. Finding the ratio of frozen fruit to Almond Milk is not an exact science, as fruit comes in different shapes and sizes. So adding 1 cup of frozen fruit varies every time I use the blender. The result is that, sometimes when I use the “Smoothie” button, it blends perfectly without lumps of frozen fruit in my blend. And sometimes, it leaves just a few. This is when the pulse button at the bottom right (looks like the heart rate symbol from an EKG machine) comes into play. Pushing that for a few seconds dials in my smoothie just right when needed.
The point of programs is that MOST TIMES, they will give you the same results as the last time you made that recipe. But every once in a while, you may need to add more time. A big advantage, it helps me get the same results with every combination.
Blendtec Power
Blendtec mainly has four motor features:
- 3.0 High Horsepower of 13 amp
- Classic 575
- Designer 625
- Professional 750
- Blender Guaranteed Total Adjusted
- 3.0 High Horsepower of 15 amp
- 3.8 High Horsepower of 15 amp
- Designer 725
- Professional 800
- 3.8 High Horsepower of 20 amp
My experience with one of Blendtec’s “low power” blenders has been extraordinary. For many years I have been using the K-Tec Champ HP3, which is a Blendtec Classic 575 that uses a 3.0 Peak HP motor at 13 amps. Although on paper it may look like a very low powered blendtec, in my experience, I have never had a problem blending any of the ingredients I put in it. It’s so powerful, it’s almost deceiving to think it’s underpowered compared to other Blendtec blenders.
Bottom line, any blendtec blender will be more than enough power for any home chef.
