Q: Hi Bill! I have fair to medium skin, hazel eyes and very curly hair. I’ve tried many different colors—currently auburn—but my biggest problem is finding the right cut.

I have a long face with a larger forehead. I know bangs are flattering on my face, but with naturally curly hair, they’re very troublesome, time consuming, and make my forehead oily.

Plus, if my hair is curly, I don’t like the look of straight bangs.

Lastly, I would really love to have long hair, Kim Kardashian-length, but I keep hearing how this is against the “rules” of a long face.

Few problems! Any suggestions for hairstyles that would look good both straight and curly, and flatter my face? Thank you! — Marie

A: Marie, thank you for your consultation request. You seem to be on the right track with most of your cut and style choices. However, it seems to me that you never get there and leave it for a while.

Here are a few examples of bang-swept side bangs that are totally non-committal compared to strong bangs:

Jennifer Lawrence with curly long face hair

Sarah Hyland with curly long face hair

Notice how these bangs are eyebrow length or long, and have some body and waves instead of falling down. The reason you’re not happy with your side-swept bangs is because they’re too short and don’t blend in with the rest of your hair.

If you were to grow out your bangs, a middle part would look great on you:

This is also a color I feel you should work on, then leave and grow your hair out:

With or without a bang, I would consider growing your hair long like this:

Blake Lively with curly long face hair

I love this loose, unruly wave on you. This voluminous style will also help create the illusion of a wider face shape.

You seem to be able to handle your bangs well, but it can be a hassle to keep them straight. If you wanted a full bang too, I’d suggest making it thin and wispy:

In this way, there is a little bang control, and the wisdom gives the hair some movement that can be good. It will also be easier to blend them in with the rest of your hair on a day without a bang.

I hope this helps you, Marie.
