Note: Severe pain in the neck, back, or jaw that occurs without injury or other obvious cause should be treated as a medical emergency. Go to the emergency room as soon as possible. This can be a a sign of a heart attack. Pain that radiates from the shoulder down the arm is a specific problem, but any suspicious back, neck, or shoulder pain should be evaluated immediately. Better safe than sorry!
The nerves of the shoulder and neck are closely connected. Shoulder pain may be caused by a neck problem and vice versa. A visit to your doctor should address the possibility of an injury to the rotator cuff and possible damage to the discs between the neck vertebrae.
If these potentially serious health conditions are ruled out, you may be dealing with joint damage or muscle stiffness due to injury or repetitive stress.
Shoulder and neck pain due to repetitive stress can come from spending a lot of time on a keyboard or any other activity that puts your neck and shoulders in a fixed position for a long time. Even sleeping in an awkward position can cause serious neck and shoulder discomfort.
In the short term, severe muscle pain can be reduced by resting, avoiding activity that causes pain, using cold packs, and anti-inflammatory medications. Over time, you will want to identify and address the causes of the pain. If you are experiencing recurring stress, look at the activity that is causing the stress, and then look for ways to improve your situation or to end the continuous periods of stress.
You can also work on stretching and strengthening the muscles in the area, which will help prevent joint damage and leave the muscles strong.
Yoga and many other stretching programs will have many exercises designed to improve the strength and flexibility of the neck and shoulder. Most strength training programs will include exercises designed to build muscle strength in the neck and shoulders.
Both stretching and strength training should start well and work up to a challenging workout. Don’t overdo it when you’re just starting out, or you risk hurting yourself more than healing the initial injury.
Here are some simple exercises that can help with neck pain from spending too much time in one position:
Place your chin on your upper chest for ten seconds. Then place your chin on your left shoulder for ten seconds, then place your right shoulder for ten seconds.
Next, place your left ear as close as possible to your left shoulder for ten seconds, and do the same with your right ear to your right shoulder.
Finish by bringing the head back to where it will go for ten seconds. Move slowly from one position to another and stop if you feel pain.
If stretching and simple exercises fail to relieve the pain or if the pain increases, seek medical attention.
Neck and shoulder pain that occurs while walking it is usually the result of a backpack that is not properly loaded or installed. Make sure heavy items are loaded close to the body, close to the inside of the pack, and make sure your pack is properly adjusted to transfer the weight to your waist, rather than your shoulders.
Some climbers also feel bad for their necks if they sit face down when checking obstacles. To prevent a stiff neck while walking, make a conscious effort to look up and down every time you reach a flat and clear area of the trail. And stretch occasionally and try to look ahead and anticipate obstacles rather than looking at your feet all the time.
