Molekule Air Mini - Air Purifier Review

It’s no secret that we were fans of the Molekule Air Purifier when it first came out. We were one of the first publications to receive a test unit, and we immediately fell in love with its simplicity and quiet operation. We also liked the Molekule concept, which works differently than HEPA-based air filtration units.

Instead of focusing on the best filters in the race to capture more air particles, Molekule focuses more to destroy the air expels the particles. It does this by means of its PECO technology, where a chemical reaction is initiated in the filter membrane itself – causing the particles to become trapped there.

Molekule Air and Molekule Air Mini side by side comparison

Enter the latest addition to the Molekule family, the mini-sized Air Mini. If the original Molekule was a tough sell because of the price tag, the new Mini might be the unit for you. Priced at just $399, it’s half the cost of a full-size Molekule unit but cleans the air as well as the original.

This unit is suitable for small rooms, 250 sq ft and below. Small and white, with a metal housing and simple controls to match – setting up the Molekule mini couldn’t be simpler.

It comes packaged in a nice cloth travel bag. Once it’s on, there’s only one power button on the top of the unit to point you to the controls. There are five different speeds to choose from, but to clean the air in your room faster you’ll want to set it to high at first. Then you can put it down to one of the lower speeds and it will run quietly all day.

The control panel is similar to the larger Molekule, as it is operated by a touch control button on the top of the unit. To turn the unit on or off, simply press and hold the power button for a few seconds.

The Molekule Mini also does not emit light like its big brother. The light diodes are placed in the core of the unit, and they have UV rays in the black PECO filter, so very little light comes out of the enclosure. This is great – as the few complaints we would hear about the Molekule Air is the amount of light it can illuminate the room.

The replacement cycle is every 3 months, and the replacement filter subscription is $99/year which will get you 2 filters every six months. Changing the filter is easy. You simply turn the unit off, press down on the outer shell and twist. The outer case opens and slides.

PECO filter in Air Mini

We have been using the Molekule Mini in our nursery for about two months now and it seems to be working well. It is silent and invisible.

The smaller model doesn’t use any app, it works like a standard air filter with an on/off/speed switch. There are small LED lights on top to let you know what speed you’re at, or when it’s time to change the filter.

Final thoughts

For $399, this is all the technology of a full-size Molekule unit in a very small package. Yes, the fan and filter are small, but this is a filter intended for bedroom use. Overall, we are happy with the performance of the Molekule Air Mini and will continue to use it in our children’s bedroom.
